‘CASA DE CARIDAD’…A BEACON OF COMPASSION IN VALENCIA

For over 118 years, the ‘Asociación Valenciana de Caridad’ (A.V.C.) has been a cornerstone of Valencia’s commitment to supporting its most vulnerable citizens. Established in 1906 by the visionary, Mayor José Sanchis Bergón, the A.V.C. was born out of a profound sense of duty to uplift the city’s struggling poor. Their mission is to provide food and more, to those in need. Over time, this modest endeavour blossomed into a multi-faceted institution dedicated to addressing the root causes of poverty with dignity, empowerment, and justice.

Initially focused on meals, the A.V.C. expanded its services to include shelter, clothing, housing assistance, health programmes, and even educational opportunities for children. Personal and social integration workshops have become central to its mission, equipping individuals with the skills and confidence needed to rebuild their lives. Reflecting its philosophy that “charity is a projection of justice,” the organization prioritizes fostering independence and agency among its beneficiaries.

Beyond immediate relief, the A.V.C. addresses systemic issues such as homelessness and joblessness, helping to prevent crime by mitigating the desperation that often leads to theft and other offenses. Its work extends beyond handouts, offering a sustainable pathway for individuals to reclaim their place in society.

The A.V.C.’s endurance is a testament to Valencia’s communal spirit. Generations of Valencians—from ordinary citizens to influential families like the Ferrers—have championed its cause. Local businesses and civic leaders have also provided essential support through fundraising initiatives like *365 Solidary Businesses*.

The organization’s prestige has attracted royal patronage, with visits from King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg in the early 20th century. More recently, (the former) ‘Queen Sofía of Spain’ served as honorary president during its centennial celebration in 2006, further cementing its stature. These milestones, along with honours like the Gold Cross of the Civil Order of Social Solidarity, underscore the A.V.C.’s importance to Valencia’s social fabric.

Adapting to the changing needs of society, the A.V.C. has professionalized its operations, employing social workers, psychologists, and educators to provide tailored care. Upgraded facilities and innovative programmes address emerging challenges such as new forms of poverty, ensuring its relevance in the 21st century.

As it enters its second century, the A.V.C. remains an enduring symbol of Valencia’s compassion. By coupling community-driven charity with systemic solutions, it continues to inspire hope and foster dignity for those most in need.  If you would like to help and volunteer or collaborate in some way, please go to their website for more details: https://www.casacaridad.com/colabora/
