The Valencia Jazz Festival will take place from the 20th of June until the 28th of July in the Jardines del Palau, at the Palau de la Música, in the Sala Rodrigo and in the Sala Iturbi, as well as in several neighbourhoods of the city, focusing on Cuban and flamenco rhythms, designed as an Atlantic bridge that connects Spanish jazz with American jazz.
The President of the Palau de la Música, José Luis Moreno; the Director of the Palau, Vicente Llimerá; the Deputy Director of Music, Nieves Pascual; and the Festival Coordinator, Enrique Monfort, have presented the XXVII Festival de Jazz de València and the series “Jazz als barris”.
Previously there has been a performance from the pianist Eduard Marquina, who will participate with his group in the “Jazz in the neighbourhoods” performance on the 27th of June. In addition, there are eight free concerts. Two of them will take place at the Jardines del Palau, one will be at the Sala Iturbi, another will be at the Sala Rodrigo and four are included in the “Jazz als barris” series which will be open-air concerts.
Valencian jazz will kick off the Festival on the 20th June with the Municipal Symphonic Band of Valencia, conducted by Cristóbal Soler and the show Kiko Berenguer Freedom Experience.
On June 26th will be the second open-air concert will be given by the Perico Sambeat Flamenco Big Band, led by the Valencian saxophonist in a fusion project.
The Sala Rodrigo will be the stage for the “Ciclo Big Bands Valencianas”, with three concerts.
July 4th – The first of them will be the Ki Big Band with the Australian multi-instrumentalist James Morrison and conducted by Ramón Cardo.
July 6th – Lírica Big Band feat Eva Romero, conducted by Kako Rubio.
July 7th – Jazz Orchestra of the Conservatorio Superior de Música de València, conducted by Jesús Santandreu and the show Black, brown & beige.
The Sala Iturbi will host national and international events such as:
On the 28th June to open the performances in the Sala Iturbi, the concert starring Methenology Band, a group with influences of Pat Metheny.
July 9th – The Cuban rhythms of Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio d’Ete, formed by pianist Rubalcaba, Ernesto Simpson and Matt Brewer.
July 10th – trumpeter Andrea Motis accompanied by Camerata Papageno with the presentation of ‘Febrero’.
July 11th – saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera with the Orquesta de València in a fusion concert with the flamenco of Juan Manuel Cañizares and harmonica specialist Antonio Serrano and pianist
.July 12th – a jazz tribute to Nino Bravo by the Orquesta y Coro de RTVE with Serafín Zubiri and David Pastor Band.
July 13th – percussionist and singer Terri Lyne Carrington
July 14th –Chucho Valdés with the show Irakere 50 anniversary.
For Jazz all barris, the dates and performers follow:
20th of July – double bassist Martina Sabariego, will kick off the series in the Plaza de Campanar.
21st of July – the trombonist Paco Soler will be performing in the Plaza del Santísimo Cristo de Natzaret.
27th of July – pianist Eduard Marquina will be in the Parc Central.
28th of July – singer Julia Sapiña will be in the Parc de Benicalap.
In addition, the International Jazz Seminar of the Palau de la Música, organized by Sedajazz, will be held from June 25 to 28. It is aimed at students and professional jazz musicians who will be able to attend master classes on different subjects, jam sessions and other complementary activities. The activities will take place at the José Iturbi Municipal Conservatory of Valencia.
The councillor of Cultural Action, Heritage and Cultural Resources, José Luis Moreno, stressed the “Jazz in the neighbourhoods” series, explaining that “this year’s locations are not fortuitous, since the festival will go to Campanar as a tribute to the victims of the tragic fire, to Parc Central for the many cultural facilities that have been created and to Benicalap for the denomination of neighbourhood of music”.
The prices of the concerts range from 5 euros to 20 euros.
