SUMMER IN MONTANEJOS

Around this time of year in Valencia it can get extremely hot with highs of 33 degrees. However, with the right heat protection, a cap and enough water, a trip to ‘Montanejos’ can be the perfect summer day out. Located at little more than a one-hour drive outside of Valencia, Montanejos is the ideal destination to escape from the city to and explore more of what the Valencian region has to offer.

The history of Montanejos begins with the significance of water in Muslim culture. It was this importance of water in Muslim religion that inspired the Arabs to build the thermal baths here (the ‘Arab baths’). These waters were then declared a public utility in 1863 leading to the baths we have today, popular amongst both locals and tourists.

There is parking next to the thermal springs where many go to swim or sit by the side (the water remains 25 degrees Celsius whole year round). However, many start with the hike, ‘Sendero los Estrechos de Montanejos’, taking you through rocky ground and steep hills but with rewarding views at the top, perfect for pictures and a well-deserved break.

Descending the mountain, you will come across a picturesque horizontal waterfall which creates an unforgettable sight against the rocky backdrop where many sometimes catch the formation of a rainbow. Continuing from the waterfall, and not so far from there, you will find the natural thermal baths, perfect for revitalisation and relaxation after a challenging hike.

From its thermal springs to its beautiful hikes, scenery and waterfalls, Montanejos is a highly recommended trip to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and explore Valencian nature.
