Last Saturday night, at ’16 Toneladas’…the British soul veterans ‘The New Mastersounds’ served up a delicious set of funk & soul to Valencia. The quartet features Simon Allen, Eddie Roberts, Pete Shand and Joe Tatton. Collectively, they played a very tight set of retro funk and soul harkening back to a combination of the instrumental rock of Booker T. & the MGs and acid jazz of the 1990s. Robert’s guitar brilliantly carried the melodies in cross-volley with improved keyboard solos. Tatton worked both a Fender Rhodes and Hammond B 3 sound that craftily drove that old school keyboard sound. Thanks to Allen’s full-octane drumming, he thrusted the energy to next level along with Shand backbeat bass grooves. It takes top quality musicianship to perform an all-instrumental set, yet they kept 16 Toneladas’s dance floor going for the whole show. Fans danced with abandon. No frills or stage antics. Just great music to move your feet and soothe your soul.
