At 87, he hangs up his gown and replaces it with brushes and landscapes of the Saler and Albufera.
Gonzalo Gómez Luzón, after more than 65 years dedicated as a legal consultant, hangs up his gown and takes up his brushes for the watercolour exhibition “Carpe Diem”, recently opened at the ‘Cervezas del Mercado de Colón’. The exhibition, composed of thirty works, is inspired by the natural wealth of El Saler and the Albufera, and pays tribute to Mediterranean flora and fauna through delicate strokes and vibrant colors. Trees, flowers, birds and beaches bring to life this exhibition that invites relaxation and contemplation.
From childhood, Gonzalo felt a profound attraction to drawing, beginning his training at the School of Arts and Crafts of Valencia, where he was thrilled to learn that our most universal painter, Joaquín Sorolla, had also studied. There, under the guidance of Professor Manuel Sigüenza, he perfected his technique and passion, sharing classes with friends who, like him, would go out to paint on the streets during holidays. “I think watercolor is the finest and most elegant form of painting,” explains Gómez Luzón, adding: “It’s very satisfying because it’s decisive, fast, and concise. Any subject you choose is accepted by this method, if you bring it to paper with enthusiasm, and it’s almost always appreciated.”
Although his professional career was spent in the world of labour law—with the founding of a consultancy firm that his daughter Sonia now continues—he never abandoned his true artistic calling. After his retirement, he returned to his brush and devoted himself completely to watercolour, a technique he defines as the clearest of the visual arts. As he explains, “in the Valencia area we have wonderful landscapes bathed in an extraordinary light.” Thanks to the region’s mild climate, Gonzalo is able to paint outdoors for much of the year, combining direct observation with his own photography to capture the essence of the Mediterranean.
Visitors to “Carpe Diem” will be able to immerse themselves in a collection of 30 watercolours filled with sensitivity, realism, and subtlety, where each work reveals the soul of someone who has decided to let the colours speak.
