Valencia, January 15, 2026. Selected by his son from more than 5,000 negatives, the photography exhibition at ‘Las Cervezas del Mercado de Colón’ presents a carefully curated selection from the photographic archive of Enrique Borredá Puyo (1921–2005). With a humanist perspective forged in the post-war period and deeply connected to Valencia and his time, he gifts us black and white images of the Central Market, Malvarrosa beach, Nazaret, the Water Tribunal, and the Albufera lagoon in the 1950s and 1970s. Pure everyday life, his work paints an intimate portrait of popular life in Valencia.
This exhibition rescues part of a legacy and reaffirms the enduring relevance of an honest & intimate perspective deeply connected to collective memory, where the document transcends its function to become a visual narrative and a sensory experience.
His son, Enrique, states that he has more than 5,000 negatives of his father’s photographs, in addition to the developed prints, many of which bear the title, date, and the competition or exhibition in which they were submitted on the back.
Enrique Borredá, born in Aiacor (Canals, Valencia), was a direct witness to a Spain marked by the post-war period. After the Civil War and his subsequent military service, he settled in Valencia, where he built his family and professional life at the National Institute of Statistics.
In the mid-1950s, he discovered a late but profound vocation for photography, which he cultivated with rigour and sensitivity from an amateur perspective, first with his inseparable Rolleiflex and later with Pentax cameras. An active member and later president of the Valencia Photo Club, he participated in numerous competitions and received the FIAP distinction for his participation and awards in international contests.
This posthumous exhibition, selected by his son Enrique, is a family tribute and a gift for those who wish to look back and discover, through other eyes, what life was like in Valencia between the 1950s and 1970s: from ‘Other Times’, ‘Boats’, ‘Malvarrosa Beach’ and ‘Seaside Towns’, to the contemplative moments of ‘Patience’, ‘All the Time in the World’ and the festive vitality of ‘Ecstasy’, ‘In the Bullring’ and Jaime Ostos. Innocence, love, and the passage of time permeate images such as ‘Innocence’, ‘Love’ and ‘Strolling’ composing a visual narrative of great plasticity and humanity. Don Enrique Borredá Puyo passed away at his home in Xàtiva on August 2, 2005, at the age of 84. Now, a sample of the artistry and plasticity of his photographs remains. The exhibition is now open to the public.
