El Corte Inglés is hosting the Gastronomic Rice Fortnight from the 9th to the 26th of May, with the Senia variety of ‘La Perla’ rice as the star ingredient.During this period, El Corte Inglés cafeterias across Spain will be offering a wide range of dishes prepared with rice as the main ingredient. Partnering up with the supplier ‘La Perla’ provide the Senia variety of rice, customers will be able to enjoy one of the most renowned and prestigious ingredients in the Valencia region, and taste it prepared in many different ways.
The Alicante branch of El Corte Inglés has been chosen to present this Gastronomic Rice Fortnight on a national level, and both César Alepuz, owner of La Perla, and José Pomares, from the Santa Pola Fishermen’s Guild took part in the presentation ceremony, held in the GastroMercat of El Corte Inglés Maisonnave.
Senia rice, native to Albufera, is a short-grain, round and pearly variety, full of flavour that is germinated in the warmth of the Mediterranean sun. Arroz La Perla belongs to a family that has been working with rice for four generations. First growing it, then milling it, and now marketing it directly in order to bring the Valencian marshland to the consumer. The Alepuz family is the only one that continues to produce Senia rice – a lost variety that the family wanted to recover with the help of the Slow Food movement. Recovering Senia was the challenge that led Teodoro Alepuz to market rice. This variety of rice is being cultivated by La Perla exclusively for the El Corte Inglés Catering area, produced in mills in the traditional way, in the heat of the sun to obtain the highest quality rice.
In store, customers will be able to enjoy the rice with seasonal vegetables, cuttlefish and prawns, seafood or Iberian prey, among other dishes, cooked by their best chefs. The delicious variety of rice-based meals will not only be available in the El Corte Inglés cafeterias, but also in the Ready Meals department of the shopping centres, to eat at home at your leisure.
