Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the album ‘When the West meets the East’ by Will McCarthy & Dhruv Kothari has been compared by the International press to ‘Kind of Blue’ (by Miles Davis) for the way it was created. Indeed, ‘When the West meets the East’ was recorded using only acoustic instrumentation: guitar/tabla/piano/saxophones/flute/castanets. This superb 21st century ‘fusion’ album is a product of just two half-day recording sessions in Valencia, Spain.
This organic approach reflects the warmth and timelessness of the instrumental tracks too. Three distinctive musicians from three different countries (including Will McCarthy and Dhruv Kothari) managed to create memorable and timeless “soundscapes” based on 5 pieces of music, composed by Will McCarthy beforehand.
Over the years, ‘When the West meets the East’ has gained a superb reputation via word of mouth and has become a “go-to” album amongst pioneering film directors. Repeatedly, they have used the rich and varied instrumental tracks from this album to create soundtracks for award-winning documentaries, short films and more. Will McCarthy’s music has been recommended by ‘The Guardian’ and ‘El País’ and he has been interviewed for BBC Radio too.
