‘THE EXCITEMENTS’ REIGNITE THE SOUL SCENE…AND PLAY ’16 TONELADAS’ ON 28 DECEMBER!

Barcelona’s premier soul and rhythm-and-blues outfit, ‘The Excitements’, returns with their electrifying single ‘Wave a Flag’, an incisive track brimming with social critique and irresistible grooves. Featuring the powerhouse vocals of Kissia San, the band explores the darker facets of conformity, tribalism, and manipulation, all wrapped in a rhythmically infectious package.

‘Wave a Flag’ is part of ‘Hard Times’ (the band’s fifth studio album) which consolidates their position as European torchbearers of classic soul. The album showcases the group’s evolution since their 2009 formation and a series of lineup changes, including the addition of Kissia San as the lead vocalist. Their unrelenting dedication to authenticity and innovation shines through in each note.  ‘Wave a Flag’ channels the band’s signature fusion of vintage soul, funk, and jazz while delivering a message that resonates with contemporary concerns. The track’s lyrics highlight themes of blind obedience and societal pressure. Lines like “turn on your TV, they’re gonna tell you what to do” criticize the role of mass media and so-called experts in shaping public opinion, urging listeners to question the narratives they consume.

Critics have drawn comparisons between the song’s hypnotic repetition and the methods used in propaganda, creating a sonic experience that challenges listeners to confront the ease of falling into groupthink.

With production by Neal Sugarman of Daptone Records, ‘Wave a Flag’ pays homage to the golden era of 1960s and 70s soul while maintaining a fresh, modern edge. The track evokes legends like Otis Redding and The Meters, driven by a robust rhythm section and vibrant horn arrangements that transport listeners to the heyday of Memphis soul and New Orleans funk.

The Excitements will perform live at 16 Toneladas in Valencia on December 28, offering fans a preview of their upcoming album. The official release of ‘Hard Times’ on January 10 promises a deeper dive into their innovative yet nostalgically rich soundscape. TICKETS: https://www.16toneladas.com/events/event/the-excitements/
