TRADITIONAL CONCERT (VALENCIA) ‘RETAULE DE NADAL’ WITH THE VOICES OF ORFEÓ VALENCIÀ (DECEMBER 23)

The ‘IGLESIA DEL PATRIARCA’ will host the traditional concert, which celebrates its 50th anniversary on Friday 23 December with pieces by composers such as Schubert, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Rutter and Gruber.  The Bancaja Foundation will offer this coming Friday, in the church of the Patriarca in Valencia, the traditional concert ‘Retaule de Nadal’ with the Orfeó Valencià, a musical group that also celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year and that closes with this performance the commemorative events for their long trajectory.

The Orfeó Valencià, conducted by Josep Lluís Valldecabres, will perform a programme with pieces from the 16th century to the present day by composers such as Michael Praetorius, Mateo Flecha, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Schubert, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Edward Elgar, Emil Cossetto, John Rutter, Eric Whitacre, Gustav Holst, Ola Gjeilo, Rafael Suárez, Mykola Leontovych, Jesús Ribera Faig and Matilde Salvador. The programme will close with Franz Xaver Gruber’s traditional ‘Stille Nacht’ melody with words by Joseph Franz Mohr.

The concert will feature the instrumental accompaniment of Jesús Debón on piano and Fernando Morales on percussion, joined by the voices of sopranos Gema Rubio, Isabel M. Gracián and Marta Campoy, and tenor Josep Mª Zapater.

The Orfeó Valencià was founded in Valencia in 1972 by Jesús Ribera Faig. Since December 1986, its conductor has been Josep Lluís Valldecabres. It has collaborated with key Valencian and Spanish orchestras, as well as with The Academy of Saint Martin-in-the Fields, the Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecília in Rome, etc. It has performed on stages all over Valencia and Spain, as well as in the USA, Russia, Canada, Cuba, Poland, Germany, Italy, the UK, France, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Hungary and Portugal. Its repertoire covers the most representative music and composers from the Renaissance to the present day, with special emphasis on Valencian composers. It has been awarded the highest prize in the 1st City of Budapest Choir Competition, as well as the Institució Insigne de la Música Valenciana (Valencian Music Academy) distinction. It sponsors the Orfeó Valencià Infantil (OVI).

The concert will be held on Friday 23 December at 20h in the church of the Patriarca. Admission is free, limited to capacity, with prior collection of invitations at the Bancaja Foundation (Plaza Tetuán, 23) from Tuesday 20 December until stocks last.
