The voice of Sandra Carrasco and the guitar of David Arahal will pay tribute to the music of Pepe Marchena in the next performance of the ‘Concerts a la Fundació’ series, organized by the Fundación Bancaja with the collaboration of Pavasal. The performance, which will take place on Friday, February 13 at 8 p.m., includes a repertoire in which both musicians dismantle the flamenco genius piece by piece and reconstruct it with a new architecture, through the study and understanding of its essence.
The original project, which includes a book and a CD nominated as Best Flamenco Album at the 2025 Spanish Music Academy Awards, was born after the death of Cristóbal Carrasco, Sandra’s father, who inspired the singer to create this repertoire. In the words of the bailaor Antonio Canales, ‘This book-CD is touching flamenco at its foundation, in its texture, in its beauty, with the overflowing art of Sandra Carrasco, who is on the verge of having her heart spill out of her mouth, putting in feeling, seeking a form, being faithful to the master, who will remain for the history books”.
Sandra Carrasco (Huelva, 1981) is one of the most versatile flamenco singers of her generation, with the greatest flamenco wisdom, who has taken flamenco far in collaborations with international artists such as Anoushka Shankar (Grammy Award). She began her studies with Adelita Domingo and Amparo Correa, and from her beginnings she obtained first prizes in various competitions. Later she joined Arcángel’s tour of Spain and Europe, gaining recognition in the flamenco scene. Since then, her talent has led her to share the stage with figures such as El Pele, Manolo Sanlúcar, Miguel Poveda and Estrella Morente, among others. Based in Madrid, she participated in the musical Enamorados Anónimos and Limón produced her first self-titled album, with collaborations from Pepe Habichuela, Josemi Carmona and Avishai Cohen. In 2014 she released her second album, Océano, a tribute to classic Latin American music together with musicians such as Chuchito Valdés, Javier Colina and Jerry González. In 2015 she published Travesía, considered among the 100 best albums in Spain. Her fourth work, La luz del entendimiento, consolidates her career. Throughout her career she has collaborated with a wide variety of artists and projects: Richard Bona, María Peláe, Estévez-Paños, Carlos Saura, the Spanish National Ballet, José Luis Montón and Eva Yerbabuena, among many others.
David Arahal (Seville, 2000) is one of the most promising new guitar talents of the moment. Guitarist and composer, he began playing the guitar at the age of 10 and trained with masters such as Manolo Sanlúcar, Rafael Riqueni, José Luis Balao and Tomatito, among others. His versatility has led him to collaborate with artists of the stature of Pepe de Lucía, Lole Montoya, Miguel Poveda, Estrella Morente, Israel Fernández and Antonio Canales. In 2021 he debuted as a soloist with his first album, Mar Verde. His second work, Callejón del Arte, presented at the 2024 Seville Flamenco Biennial, confirms his artistic maturity and his ability to create his own language within the genre, exploring new sounds and techniques that define him as one of the most promising figures in current flamenco. In 2024 he was awarded as New Talent in the IX Manolo Sanlúcar International Flamenco Awards, also receiving the Fatiguillo Revelation Award granted by specialized critics at the Flamenco Biennial.
The Recordando a Marchena concert will take place on Friday, February 13 at 8:00 p.m. at the Fundación Bancaja (C/General Tovar, 3). Advance ticket sales will begin on Tuesday, February 10 from 5:00 p.m. at the box office (Plaza Tetuán, 23).
