LA FÁBRICA DE HIELO: WHERE THE CABANYAL GOES TO CHILL

A former ice factory has become one of Valencia’s most distinctive independent cultural spaces – and it is just a few steps from the beach. There are plenty of places in Valencia where you can have a drink. There are considerably fewer where you can wander in for a beer and find yourself listening to live music, watching a DJ, discovering an exhibition, browsing a market or simply sitting back and soaking up the atmosphere.

La Fábrica de Hielo is one of those places.

Hidden away on Calle Pavía in El Cabanyal, close to Playa del Cabanyal, this former industrial building has been transformed into a wonderfully unconventional meeting place for music, culture, food and conversation. It as an independent creative space dedicated to artistic creation and dissemination, with everything from music and dance to cinema, literature, theatre and visual arts finding a home here.

And that eclecticism is precisely the attraction.

FROM ICE TO IDEAS

The name gives away the building’s industrial past. The original factory was built to produce and store ice for the fishing industry, helping to keep the catch from Valencia’s port fresh. The old ice factory eventually fell into disuse, but rather than disappearing completely, the building was given a remarkable second life.

Today, its industrial character has not been hidden behind expensive renovation. Quite the opposite. The high ceilings, exposed structure and spacious interior help create the feeling that you have stumbled upon somewhere that was never designed to be a conventional bar or cultural centre.

That is part of the charm.

The slightly rough-around-the-edges architecture is combined with colourful furniture, plants, quirky decorative touches and an informal layout. It feels creative without trying too hard to look “creative” – a distinction that is becoming increasingly difficult to find.

MORE THAN A BAR

Calling La Fábrica de Hielo a bar doesn’t really do it justice.

Its programme now ranges across live music, DJ sessions, comedy, performing arts, workshops, audiovisual events and other cultural activities. The 2026 programme, for example, has included everything from blues and R&B to Cuban music, house and deep house, comedy and informal scientific events.

There is also a strong emphasis on discovering artists rather than simply booking the same familiar names. One evening might bring a live band; another could feature DJs; another might involve an experimental performance or a completely different cultural activity.

That unpredictability is one of the reasons regulars keep coming back.

You don’t necessarily need a plan.

Sometimes the best way to experience La Fábrica de Hielo is simply to arrive, order something to drink and see what is happening.

MUSIC BY THE SEA

Music has become one of the venue’s defining features.

The calendar regularly includes live bands, DJs and special sessions, with genres ranging from blues and R&B to electronic music, Brazilian and Cuban sounds and more experimental projects. Its popular Diumenges Turia programme has also brought live music to Sunday afternoons and evenings, creating an appealing combination of music, drinks and the seaside atmosphere of the Cabanyal.

The setting works particularly well for music.

There is none of the formality of a traditional concert hall. People talk, drink, wander around and come and go. Some are there specifically for the music; others have simply dropped in for the evening and discover a band they might never otherwise have heard.

It is very Valencia.

A CREATIVE CROSSROADS

Perhaps the most interesting thing about La Fábrica de Hielo is its refusal to fit neatly into a category.

It is not quite a concert venue, not quite an art centre, not quite a bar and not quite a community space.

It is a little of all four.

That philosophy has made it part of the cultural identity of El Cabanyal, a neighbourhood that has undergone enormous change while retaining its distinctive maritime character. The venue sits comfortably within that mixture of old and new: traditional fishermen’s streets and modern cafés; historic buildings and contemporary culture; the Mediterranean just around the corner and a constantly changing creative scene.

And the neighbourhood itself is changing again. In 2026, Valencia is preparing the opening of the new Museu de la Mar in the historic Casa dels Bous, another project focused on preserving and interpreting the maritime heritage of El Cabanyal-Canyamelar.

La Fábrica de Hielo represents another side of that same story – not preserving the past in a museum, but giving an old industrial building a new purpose.

COME FOR THE DRINK, STAY FOR THE ATMOSPHERE

You can, of course, visit without attending an organised event.

That is part of the appeal. Come with friends, grab a drink, find a seat and watch the world go by. The beach is nearby, so La Fábrica de Hielo also makes an ideal stop before or after a walk along the seafront.

It is particularly good for those occasions when you don’t want an evening to be over-planned.

And if something is happening that night, even better.

The current opening times listed by La Fábrica de Hielo are Tuesday to Thursday from 17:00, Friday from 17:00, Saturday from midday and Sunday from midday, with closing times varying according to the day. Monday is currently closed.

Because the programme changes constantly, it is worth checking the schedule before making the trip. Recent listings have included live bands, DJ sessions, comedy, workshops and special cultural events.

THE VERDICT

Valencia has become increasingly good at finding new uses for old spaces, but La Fábrica de Hielo remains one of the most successful examples.

Its secret is that it doesn’t feel manufactured.

The building still has its industrial soul, the programme is deliberately eclectic and the atmosphere is relaxed enough to make you feel that you have discovered a place rather than simply visited one.

So, if you’re in the Cabanyal and fancy something different, forget the glossy cocktail bars for an evening.

Head towards the beach, turn into Calle Pavía and look for the old ice factory.

You may arrive for a drink. You could end up staying for the music.
