MASTERPIECES FROM THE SOROLLA MUSEUM… A NEW EXHIBITION OF THE ARTIST AT THE BANCAJA FOUNDATION UNTIL 6 APRIL

The temporary closure of the Sorolla Museum for its renovation and expansion will allow a unique collection of his masterpieces to be brought together in Valencia. Starting October 3, the Bancaja Foundation will become the temporary home for the most representative masterpieces by Joaquín Sorolla from the collection of the Sorolla Museum in Madrid, which is currently closed to the public while its expansion and renovation work is underway. This exceptional circumstance of the museum’s closure has made it possible to bring together a collection of works that are difficult to loan all together for a single exhibition.

The exhibition Sorolla. Masterpieces from the Sorolla Museum, produced by the Bancaja Foundation, the Ministry of Culture, the Sorolla Museum, and the Sorolla Museum Foundation, will present an extraordinary selection of masterpieces from the artist’s house-museum in Valencia. Their quantity and relevance make their joint exhibition outside their usual space a milestone.

The exhibition will feature 60 works, 59 of which will travel from Madrid to Valencia for a project that will explore Sorolla’s life and work through the most notable works in the painting collection of the Museo Sorolla and the Museo Sorolla Foundation, such as Paseo a la orilla del mar (Walk by the Sea), El baño del caballo (The Horse’s Bath ) and La siesta (The Siesta) , among others. The exhibition will feature masterpieces not previously exhibited in the extensive history of monographic exhibitions on Joaquín Sorolla held by the Bancaja Foundation at its headquarters in Valencia.

The extensive and relevant collection of works from the house-museum will interact in the gallery with the canvas ¡Triste herencia! (Sad Inheritance! ), from the Bancaja Foundation collection, with which Sorolla won the Grand Prix at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris and which brought him international acclaim.

Curated by the director of the Sorolla Museum, Enrique Varela, the exhibition will be divided into different sections covering his early formative years in Valencia and Italy; the affirmation of his artistic personality in Madrid with the arrival of national and international recognition; his mastery of the portrait genre with canvases of family life; the iconography of the sea so relevant to his artistic output with emblematic works that he kept; his intimate garden painting; his visual chronicle of contemporary Spain with period types and landscapes; and his stay in Cala de San Vicente (Pollença, Mallorca) in 1919, which was his last trip to paint the Mediterranean landscape and sea before his death.

The exhibition will open to the public on October 3 and will be open until April 6th, 2026.
