‘Paquito D’Rivera Quintet’ will be at the annual ‘ Javea International Jazz Festival’ on 3 August. Joining D’Rivera are Pepe Rivero (piano), Yuvisney Aguilar (percussion), Reinier Elizarde Ruano(double-bass) and Sebastian Laverde (vibraphone). The concert is at 22.30h and is with seating and is free for the public.
Paquito D’Rivera, the versatile Cuban musician, is known for his prowess in Latin Jazz and genres including classical music. He is noted for his curiosity, imagination and technical virtuosity, as well as an unmistakable sense of humour too! He has explored diverse genres, from tango jazz to Brazilian music, Afro-Cuban jazz and classical music and has won many GRAMMYS as well!
Born in Havana, D’Rivera began studying saxophone with his father. At an early age, he was already playing with the National Theatre Orchestra and, by the age of 17, he was a soloist with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. He founded the revolutionary Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna and the influential band Irakere, fusing Afro-Cuban, jazz, rock and classical music. He defected from Cuba in 1980 and is based in New York where he has since become a part a key part of the thriving music scene. He has collaborated with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. With over 40 albums to his name his music spans a wide repertoire. This is a unique opportunity to see the fantastic ‘Paquito D’Rivera Quintet’ up close and in a beautiful setting too.
