‘T.A.P ORGAN TRIO’ PLAYED ‘UBIK CAFÉ’ (EXCLUSIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC REPORT)

The ‘T.A.P Organ Trio’ features Simon Mark Taylor on baritone saxophone, Sergio Albentosa on organ and Tico Porcar on drums. The group’s sound is based on the 1960s era, where the Hammond Trio sound really came to the forefront of Jazz. Influences include Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Billy Preston, George Benson, Johnny Griffin, Leo Parker and many more. Boogaloo and swing with a lot of soul!

‘T.A.P Organ Trio’ roused the music-loving ‘Ubik Café’ Sunday afternoon crowd with a superb set that included classics by Kenny Burrell and George Benson. Early on, the classic standard by Bobby Hebb ‘Sunny’ got a great reception from the audience too. From time to time, the concert featured guest bassist Garry Jackson. His virtuoso improvisations were welcome additions to the trio’s sound. When locking in, he added a special groove to the set too.

Renowned saxophonist Simon Mark Taylor was a great and charming frontman too. His melodic baritone sax and warm rapport with the audience helped keep the momentum of this groovy concert from beginning to end. He makes what is actually quite difficult to do…. look rather effortless, which is no easy feat.

Local legend and ace drummer Tico Porcar’s sense of timing is impeccable and really in-the-pocket. It’s a way of playing the drums that is both soulful and intuitive. Tellingly, keyboardist Sergio’s nostalgic ‘Hammond Organ’ sound added colour and melody with feeling and precision on each and every song too.

Another highlight of the concert was guest vocalist Sara Dowling’s passionate and sensual version of ‘Stormy Monday’ that went down a storm with the public. All in all, it was a great gig by a distinctive collection of musicians. They made a live music concert what it should be, a joyous event to be shared with all.

T.A.P trio ended their set with a track ‘Return of the Prodigal Son’ from their new self-titled debut album. Check out their bandcamp page below for more info. Set in the hip barrio of Ruzafa, Ubik Café is planning a programme of live music every Sunday from now on. Watch this space!
