On Sunday 14th July, legendary British band ‘The Cult’ played at the Jardins De Vivers (Viveros Gardens). The gig was one of many in this year’s ‘Conciertos De Viveros’ in Valencia. Being the same night as the England v Spain Euro 2024 final – the capacity crowd were in high spirits on arrival. The band came out 25 minutes late, but this didn’t matter as it gave the Spanish fans time to watch Spain take an early second-half goal against England!
With the stage freshly smudged with burning sage, The Cult launched into their set with ‘In The Clouds’ and followed straight on with ‘Rise’ which had the entire crowd singing along.
In the 30 degrees heat, Ian Astbury looked cool as the proverbial cucumber on stage, throwing his tambourine into the crowd after ‘Wild Flower’ before continuing with another (which magically appeared from seemingly nowhere!).
Giving his voice a rest halfway through the set, the fans were treated to an acoustic version of ‘Edie’ before continuing with the classic ‘Sweet Soul Sister’.
By this point, Spain had beaten England 2-1 to win the Euro Finals. A rapturous crowd sang along to the rest of the set, with smiles of both joy and pride. As the band played their final song ‘Love Removal Machine’ the skies lit up with fireworks across Valencia.
Thanking the crowd and leaving the stage – the band returned to deafening applause for an encore – ‘Brother Wolf, Sister Moon’ followed by the epic ‘She Sells Sanctuary’.
The crowd goes crazy. They think it’s all over – it is now!!!
