‘Sala Mya’ was packed and the crowd’s energy was electric whilst anticipating this concert. And The Furs delivered, exceeding the fans’ expectations. Veteran post-punk icons Richard Butler on lead vocals and brother Tim Butler on bass embody the cool, stylish vibe of everything alternative rock music offers. But most importantly, their skills are top notch. Opening up with The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll hit hard with the space-rock guitar as they continued on with hard-hitting drums of So Run Down. Next, The Ghost in You elevated the audience vibe evoking a frenzied and prolonged applause.
Fans joined in singing the chorus with the band during Love My Way. And favorite hits continued to roll out with Highwire Days, No Easy Street, Heartbreak Beat, Heaven
and Pretty in Pink.
Butler connected with fans reaching down, shaking hands (despite having camera phones pressed towards his face). He sustained a notable vocal-ease when singing a prolonged “Heaven…” at the end of the song, demonstrating his vocal dexterity. After that, he endearingly smiled expressing the exhaustion of that vocal feat. A very human moment for fans.
The Butler brothers are the sole founding members remaining as they have been this same driving force for decades. But not to overlook that they have the exceptionally talented guitarist Rich Good and keyboardist/synthesizer Amanda Kramer (Information Society, Golden Palominos, 10,000 Maniacs, Tom Bailey, The Church and more). The touring ensemble sounds great. One sombre omission from the musical line up was long-time band member, saxophonist Mars Williams who passed away last fall.
“Stars come down in you. And love, love, love, you can’t give it away”.
- Heaven (We miss you, Mars.)
