The proposal originated in the Mestalla area to foster community and enjoy tapas with different recipes.A new meeting place for lovers of beer, vermouth, and canned goods has opened in the city. It’s called ‘Latabarra’ and, as its name suggests, it’s here to make its mark, offering traditional canned goods and tapas with a creative twist. Located at Polo y Peyrolón Street , near the Mestalla stadium, it’s opening its doors with a clear philosophy: to recapture the spirit of old-fashioned bars, where tapas were enjoyed together and good times were an everyday occurrence.
“We want Valencia to recapture the essence of the traditional bar,” says Andrés García, one of the project’s partners and owner of the Zalamero coqueria, adding that Latabarra is a tribute to local traditions, given a modern twist to preserve the spirit of the neighbourhood. The project is completed by Abel Martínez and Carlos Gimeno.
The flavour in the can
The menu combines traditional tinned goods with surprising recipes, designed to be enjoyed with friends in a relaxed atmosphere. Among the featured canned products are pickled mussels, razor clams, small chorizo sausages in Albariño wine, sardines with Padrón peppers, and canned bluefin tuna loin. Customers can also enjoy a variety of gildas (anchovy, olive, and pepper skewers) and croquettes, such as Iberian ham and corn nuts or blue cheese and walnuts. As for the tapas and the dishes to round off the experience, as they call them on the menu, there are numerous recipes that combine ingredients and are presented in a way that’s different from the usual. These range from Italian burrata with confit leek and almond, to “tabarritas”—their own version of fried pork belly with lime—or preserved artichokes with 100% acorn-fed Iberian ham and egg yolk.
Among the most celebrated new dishes are the focaccia with black pork sobrasada and honey, the grilled pastrami roll with melted cheese and gherkin, and the Andalusian pringá montadito with croissant bread and mint mayonnaise , which they claim will be the house specialty. For a sweet touch, there are dishes like the pain au chocolat French toast with Belgian chocolate ice cream or the pear poached in red wine with mascarpone and toasted almonds.
The Liquid Letter
The tapas menu is paired with a carefully curated selection of vermouths, representing various regions. Latabarra offers its own draft vermouth , “Latabarra,” made with Yzaguirre red wine, Campari, and soda water. However, other notable vermouths come from the Valencian Community and other parts of Spain: Carmelita Rosa and Carmelita Naranja (Valencia), Jarabe de Palo Rojo and Jarabe de Palo Blanco (Alicante), Nordés Rojo and Nordés Blanco (Galicia), and Ataman from Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz). Vermouths to enjoy both inside and on the terrace. Inside, there are two barrels for standing, as well as two high tables, creating a friendly and vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of old-fashioned bars. Outside, two more barrels invite you to linger after your meal, glass in hand. ‘Latabarra’ is not just a place to go and eat something different, it’s a space to build community, share beers and enjoy tapas like before, but with a renewed perspective!
