British band (from Manchester ) HENGE will be touring Spain next week. Specifically, their tour will stop off in Barcelona ( Sala Upload ) on September 9th , Madrid ( El Sol ) on September 10th, Valencia ( 16 Toneladas ) on September 11th, Zaragoza ( Sala López ) on September 12th, and San Sebastián ( Boga Boga Festibala ) on September 13th.
HENGE define their music as “cosmic dross” (it’s clear they don’t beat around the bush; that’s exactly what they titled their first EP, “Cosmic Dross” ). On stage, each member acts (costumed) as a fictional character: Zpor ( Matthew Whitaker , vocals and guitar), Goo ( Pete Turner , bass and synthesizer), Grok ( Roy Medhurst , synthesizers), and Nom ( Sam Draper , drums). They’ve built their reputation on the electronic, psychedelic, and progressive madness of their hilarious live shows. Theirs is a music that defies easy definition, occupying a space between raves and progressive rock, one that no one seems to have known existed until they came along. An energetic, subversive, and stimulatingly playful space. And very freaky .
Let this excerpt from the review of their debut LP, “Attention Earth!” , published on the British webzine Listen With Monger at the end of 2018, serve as a compass to capture the unpredictable sonic journey they propose: “To start, a six-minute track, ‘Mushroom One’, a bold move, especially as it moves from a spaghetti western opening to a dubstep rhythm adorned with Dick Dale-esque guitars and vocals reminiscent of the early days of The Prodigy .” More to the point, here’s how they present themselves on social media and the like: “Attention humans! This is HENGE. We are not from this world, we bring music from distant planets. We offer this gift for the edification of humanity and that we can eventually put an end to wars and establish new homes in space .” They were voted “Best Live Act” of 2018 at the Independent Festival Awards . And in 2022 they finished second in the “Best Music Video” category at the Tokyo Film Awards , for the music video for their song “New Planet” .
In 2025, the year in which they are celebrating their ten years as a live band (their first release, a five-track EP, came out in 2017), they released a new album at the end of January, the fourth of their career (they also have seven EPs), entitled “Journey To Voltus B”.
