This is a unique event. Here Flamenco singing marries with the guitar of the Delta Blues. Tradition and modernity… and songs of death and loss…like a Seguiriya and Soleá in a Western! The vocals come from the hand of Antonio Fernández from Granada and on electric guitar Pedro De Dios (Guadalupe Plata, Pelomono), two impressive artists with a long career. They have made a great album ‘Cantes Malditos’, made in Peligros* (Granada) by ‘la Josefa’ (José Sànchez) during 2023, via the Everlasting records label.
Guitarist Pedro de Dios has always flirted with flamenco sonorities on the records of his formidable blues band Guadalupe Plata, but fate had it that he was presented with the opportunity to immerse himself in them in depth. Granada-born cantaor Antonio Fernández was recording his new album when suddenly; his guitarist stood him up and disappeared from the studio sessions. It was then that his producer, José Sánchez, had the idea of calling a neighbour to replace him. That neighbour was Pedro, who, as he tells us, at first felt “too much respect” to join but finally took up the challenge.
In that improvised collaborative experience, chemistry emerged, and the two artists felt the same: they had to record an album fusing their worlds, paying tribute to classic figures like La Niña de los Peines to the rhythm of ‘dark’ palos like the seguiriya, the zambra, the toná, the soleá or the petenera. Thus was born ‘Cantes Malditos’, a very special and extraordinary album.
