‘La Xarranta’ has been open for nearly 10 years in the emblematic barrio of Cabanyal-Canyamelar. It is run by the very affable & talented chef and lovely owner Nuria Guerrero. She is so welcoming and the cuisine is so beautifully presented that it just makes you want to go back! She has lived in the barrio for 30 years and worked in the world of restaurants for all that time too. It’s a family-run restaurant as her friendly & helpful son Carlos is the front-of-house manager too…along with Nuria. They are happy to host a crowd that ranges from loyal locals from the barrio to the international set of Berklee Valencia musicians too. By the way, Nuria tells us with a smile that the Valencian expression ‘La Xarranta’ means… the talkative one!
The range of mostly Spanish tapas is impressive and the product is fresh, attractive and presented with eye-catching & Mediterranean flair. Regarding the ‘carta’, Nuria rightly tells us that it is ‘creative’ and not fixed and changes with the time and seasons.
Amongst the many tapas recommended would be the squid, octopus, sardine, artichokes, steak and rice dishes. The select wines range from Valencia, Castilla la Mancha, Rioja and Galicia… and there are craft beers too. ‘La Xarranta’ believes in supporting independent bodegas, so you will find some interesting & original vinos and cervezas here as well.
Their homemade desserts are really tasty and currently include cheesecake with pistachio, ‘torrija’ with ice cream, apple tart with toffee as well truffle & raspberry mille-feuille.
With an in-house piano, La Xarranta’s wonderful live music evening every Thursday has become renowned on the music scene! It is the initiative of local lad and world-renowned pianist Albert Sanz. He is a regular fixture here and you can experience top notch concerts of jazz, flamenco, folk & classical music too. After each concert, there is a jam session and the audience is littered with musicians who happily take to the stage with their instruments!
This cosy restaurant feels like home from home and you are really made to feel welcome here. It’s a wonderful combination of tasty Spanish cuisine, nice wines, welcoming hosts, an interesting public and great live music!
