The local basketball fraternity received some exciting news recently with the confirmation that the restaurant chain ‘Foster’s Hollywood’ will become a major sponsor for the Valencian federation. The company was created in 1971 by three Americans living in Spain, and specializes in the kind of cuisine you would find typical to the United States. Although the founding members are no longer associated with the food chain, they sowed the seed sufficiently to create a thriving marketing plan that now boasts over 200 restaurants throughout the country.
It is the first time that Foster’s Hollywood will financially support a sport in Spain, but they recently dabbled in similar sponsorship opportunities in America, when this summer they teamed up with Budweiser in an initiative to help promote the inaugural Club Mundial Soccer Championships.
Anyone who bought a Budweiser in one of the Foster’s Hollywood chains in America at that time was given the opportunity to win tickets to Real Madrid’s game against Al Hilal in Miami, by entering a sweepstake.
At the media launch organised at the Confedecom building in Paterna, Foster’s Hollywood and the Valencia Basketball region outlined their planned collaboration for the immediate future.
The podium consisted of Alexis Chauvin (Director of Marketing Foster’s Hollywood) Salvador Fabregat (President of the Valencian Basketball Federation) and Miguel Serrano (Director of Foster’s Hollywood Levante) The trio expressed their delight at the agreement between the two parties and explained the Division One Leagues of both the men and women’s divisions in the Valencia region will benefit from this grass roots partnership.
The comunidad is well represented with 52 teams in total benefiting from the alliance. 28 men’s teams stretching from Castellon to Alicante start their league programme on 12th October. A week later, the women’s league commences with 24 teams hailing from as far North as Castellon, to as far South as Murcia. Both leagues play every other club home and away in the group phase, with the top four clubs making the finals day, which will be played at a venue yet to be decided.
Alexis Chauvin explained he was keen to see both the women’s and men’s supported with parity in the sponsorship deal, and that their target audience was amateurs playing basketball because they wanted to commit to a sport that is both popular in the USA and Spain, and gives opportunities to non-professionals.
The current men’s champions are BC Peñiscola Fasca, whilst El Pilar-UPV hold the title in the women’s category. Several matches will be livestreamed on you tube each week. Alexis was also open to expanding the agreement beyond the agreed year if the sponsorship proves to be successful for both parties.
