24/7 VALENCIA: Can you tell us in detail about your new book, MORRISSEY and The SMITHS (So Much to Answer For)?
CARLOS PÉREZ DE ZIRIZA: It’s a sort of review of his work from different aspects of his work that have been little explored, with a review of his entire discography, a dictionary of creative references and an exclusive interview with Morrissey. I think it is the most complete and personal book ever written about The Smiths in Spanish, and from a very modern point of view, even if it is a bit cheeky for me to say so. That’s why I think it could be indispensable for Spanish-speaking fans, although it’s also perhaps a bit much for me to say so too.
Could you tell us about a typical month for you as a music writer in Spain? I am a freelance journalist and I collaborate with various media, so my day-to-day life is that of a journalist who spends a lot of time at home in front of the PC, adapting to the needs of the media I write for. I like my job. It is my vocation. I consider myself lucky.
What do you think of the music scene in Valencia, both live and recorded? It’s a very diverse scene, rich in nuances, with all kinds of styles and with very talented people, whose work should be having more of an impact throughout Spain as a whole.
You’re originally from Madrid, what do you think of the quality of life in Valencia as a place to live and work? It’s an extraordinary city to live in, but don’t let anyone read me, because what I really want is for people outside not to find out: I don’t want the city to become a theme park for tourists, where locals can’t afford a flat and are driven out of the city by speculation and gentrification. We can die of success, and that is the worst legacy we can leave to our children.
