Last Sunday March 12th, Benidorm hosted the VI Regatta of the SUMA Fixed Bank League of the Mediterranean, organised by the Rowing Federation of the Valencian Community with the support of SUMA Gestión Tributaria. With the help of warm weather on the Levante coast, the public enjoyed watching the spectacle which turned out to be a great success. After this competition, there are now five remaining races, completing the season of one of the most important regional competitions on the national scene.
With more than 600 athletes the regatta had a large number of participants belonging to a diverse age group, from children to veterans. The young ones covered 700 metres and completed a tack, represented by a boat from Club Rem Cía Gandía in the Children’s Mixed Promotion category. This course was similar in the rest of the races, except in the junior and senior categories, which had to cover 1,400 metres and complete three tacks. The cadet category had Club Náutico Santa Pola as the leading star, winning the male and female races, as well as participating in the Mixed Promotion. Real Club Náutico Gandía also formed a mixed team.
The regatta also featured the start of the SCM (formed by people who have overcome Breast Cancer) and SCM Promotion categories. Club Náutico Benidorm was present in the first category and Real Club De Regatas De Alicante won the second one. Other categories present in the race were Mixed Promotion Category and Mixed Gender Promotion, with wins for Real Club Náutico Valencia A and Real Club Náutico Calpe respectively.
In the veteran category, Club Rem Denia won the women’s race, while Real Club Regatas Alicante finished first in the men’s race.
Meanwhile, the young women of Club Náutico Santa Pola gave their club the third victory of the morning and the young men of Real Club Regata Alicante won the men’s race in this age group.
The Alicante club rounded off a great day of rowing with victories in the two senior races. The women finished the race after 6 minutes and 50 seconds, ten seconds less than Club Deportivo de Mar Clot de l’Illot El Campello and Club Náutico Santa Pola, second and third respectively after a very tight finish. Only one hundredth of a second separated them. In the men’s race, Real Club Regatas Alicante crossed the finish line in a time of 6 minutes and 14 seconds, five seconds behind the boat from Real Club Náutico Denia. Secció Esportiva Universitat d’Alacant completed the podium.
The next regatta of the Mediterranean SUMA Fixed Bench League, which will be the seventh regatta of the competition, is scheduled for the 26th of March, in Valencia.
