‘Atypical Valencia’ is a brand set up in 2013, created by Valencian designers who illustrate the city’s culture and tradition. There are two shops: one in the Historic Centre of Valencia and one in Mercat Central. Their idea is to take the tacky away from souvenirs, providing locals and tourists alike with colourful and unique illustrations. I had the privilege to speak with Maria, the shop assistant at the store on C/ Caballeros…. located in the Historic Centre of Valencia. She explained to me that their goal is to differ from classic souvenir designs, demonstrating that souvenirs can be handmade, stylish, and trendy. The name ‘Atypical’ and the designs they sell truly evoke their creative uniqueness.

The products at Atypical Valencia range from poster prints, postcards, magnets, tote bags, T-Shirts and even recipe books for Valencian cuisine! While many of their designers are Spaniards or Valencians, some come from other countries around the world. Virginia Lorente is a local Valencian illustrator whose colourful and vibrant designs light up the majority of the store. Lorente used to be an architect, but her true passion was drawing. She is inspired by the city’s most emblematic buildings, creating eye-catching prints of sites such as Mercat Central, Mercat de Colón, the Abastos swimming pool and the Rialto Theatre among others. The prints at Atypical Valencia suit all kinds of artistic styles, providing illustrations from other artists such as Elisa Talens, Julieta XLF, Miguel Monkc and Alba Quilez.

Not only does Atypical Valencia design for the public, but they also design for private institutions and have special rates for events and big purchases. Additionally, they collaborate with interior design studios offering special discounts and the possibility of printing their designs in custom sizes. Their illustrations are excellent as a present for yourself or for your friends and family, so make sure you check out the stores!
