Set in a quiet corner of the old town and literally a stone’s throw from the Rio Turia Gardens, you will find the long-established ‘Gestalguinos.’ It has a cosy, warm vibe and an authenticity and a creative vision too….as can be seen by their art and photography exhibitions and regular live acoustic music sessions. It is well known by locals of the barrio and the surrounding area… but perhaps less so by visitors to the city of Valencia. Indeed, various members of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have been popping by here for a good beer, good conversation and some memorable live music over the years. We caught up with new owner Javo for an exclusive interview….
24/7 VALENCIA: Could you tell us something more about ‘Gestalguinos’?
JAVO: ‘Gestalguinos’ was started back in 1975 by the previous owner, Paca. The name comes from her roots of having originally come from the village of ‘Gestalgar’ in the Valencia region. She has put a lot of love into converting the place, which was an old bodega from the 1940s and she transformed it into what you see now… with a warm interior with lots of wood and ceramics and a distinctive floor too. From the very beginning, ‘Gestalguinos’ has had a ‘progressive’ outlook and has always been open to art and photography exhibitions and promoting local live music. It’s always been a meeting place for like-minded creative people of all ages. You can play chess here or enjoy a good local craft beer like the ‘Tyris’ we have on display. We also have excellent Cuban rum and rice liqueurs and ‘herbero’ and local wines and homemade ‘Vermuts’ and more.
Regarding music, we now have flamenco jam sessions every Wednesday and we have different types of live music evenings with jazz and folk and boleros and classical music and blues. Check out our Facebook page for updates about events. You should please call and reserve and pay in advance by bizum for music events as space is limited. Concerts begin at 20h. I myself am a musician and my socio Pablo is an actor and poet and novelist. So, we both have an affinity with creative people. Budding artists and photographers should know that we are open to their proposals regarding monthly exhibitions here too.
