THE ‘MATISSE CLUB’ HELD THE FIRST ‘FUNKIN’ THURSDAY’ JAM SESSION THIS WEEK!

Exhibiting the talent of many different musicians in a fun and laid-back environment, the first ‘Funkin’ Thursday’ Jam Session came to the Matisse Club this past Thursday, bringing a lively and dynamic amalgamation of musical talent. Director Jason Faust states that the Funkin’ Thursday jam sessions aim to “create a culture of bringing all different types of communities together through music, dance and enjoyment,” and the aim was undeniably met last Thursday at the inauguration of the jam sessions.

As Jason Faust and the house band took to the stage to commence the session, it didn’t take long for the audience to fill the floor and jam along to the funk and soul sound. The band consists of Jason on vocals, keyboard and trumpet, Sam Vilu on electric guitar, Kevin Reirson on electric bass, and Maru Valdez on drums. Not only do they open up the session with an extraordinary performance of covers and originals, but they support the other musicians on stage throughout the night.

With no rigid structure and a laid-back atmosphere, the session combined already anticipated guest musicians with talented audience members eager to join in on the music. In this sense, the audience and the performers were intertwined. This contributed to an extremely authentic and fun ambience, which prompted attendees to let loose and get involved. Singer Lucas Lopez gave his twist on ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ in an engaging performance, and DououNganga and Eric Simone got everyone dancing with their upbeat set. Other guest musicians performed unique renditions of Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky ‘,’ Black Pumas ‘Colours’ and Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive,’ as well as many originals.

The Jam sessions are a great way for musicians to promote their music and upcoming shows, but also an opportunity to spend the night dancing away in an intimate venue. According to Jason Faust,  Funkin’ Thursdays, “encourage musicians on any instrument to come be a part of the jam session, suggest groovy songs, and bring their vibrant creativity to create a fun environment for everyone jamming and dancing along.”

Sign up to play at ‘Funkin’ Thursdays’ by sending a direct message to @funkinthursdays on instagram, or come along next Thursday to enjoy the funky tunes and vibrant atmosphere. The Jam sessions start at 22:30h and finish at 1am, and are followed by a DJ set until 3:30am.
