24/7 Valencia: Could you tell us more about your book?
Enrique Borredá López: “When I decided to write a book on Spinology I had very clear in my mind that it had to be a book to make you think, a book about the philosophy of Spinology. If we study how the human body works and how incredible it is to live, there is no choice but to admit that there is an order in nature and that we, being part of it, live because internal harmony is the constant of our organism. I never have felt that there is a need to write about how we do what we Spinologists do. The working procedure of the Spinology profession is explained in the final chapters of the book as a logical consequence of a practical philosophy. It motivates and encourages me so much more to write about why we do what we do.
The first time we attend a potential Spinology practice member, the first thing we do is to listen to them first and then talk to them about the concept and practice of Spinology. We want the person to know and understand why he or she is coming, what we offer and how to benefit from our services when using them correctly. Our intention is for the person to understand that having the spine checked regularly can become a constructive life habit in his/her family lifestyle. Only after we have covered this step of the protocol of the first visit do we move to action, to the application of the technique of Spinology. Throughout my life I have given thousands of Spinology orientations to future clients, first from my teacher P.J. Martin with whom I had the pleasure to work in her practice in Philadelphia, and then, over more than 44 years, to the people who have visited my centres, especially in Valencia. That half hour we dedicate to each person, the first time we meet, is a challenge for Spinologists since people usually look for us for different reasons and we offer them something more than what they came in for.
Even after so many years in practice, every time I am expecting a first visit, I feel the same butterflies in my stomach because I hope to share all the good things that can be carried out by my profession by getting them to understand what it truly is: a way to take care of yourself and enjoy life more by keeping your body in harmony and in fullness. Sometimes I wonder how many people in Spinology have had their lives changed, or in other words, how many people have changed their life to know and apply the concept of my profession. The number is impossible to calculate but I know there are many. What makes me even happier is to think of the number of children that have grown free of spinal occlusions; this truly is very rewarding work.
And best of all is to think about the expansive effect of Spinology. If you throw a stone into a pond, the water level always rises. The waves spread and reach the shores; the whole pond feels the effect. The rise of the water can be infinitesimal but, inevitably, the water rises. The more stones we throw, the more we notice it, especially if we spend a lot of time trying to perceive and physically verify the effect. Anyway, I am left with the inscrutable truth that the water rises.
This serves me as an analogy to show the cause-effect law of Spinology. This is what I have written about, the scope of our daily work in the Spinology centres. This is the main reason, what moves me and makes me continue to enjoy what I’ve been doing all these three and a half decades.
The last time I was at the Golds’ home in Philadelphia in 2008, I asked Reggie about his book draft I knew he began in the mid-1980s. I told him I was planning to write a Spinology book, that I already had some notes. His response was to tell his wife Irene to find the folder of the book draft he started. When he brought it, he gave it to me and looking at me seriously he said, “Finish it”.
I was very moved by his words and the trust and responsibility he placed in me. I replied that I accepted the “order” and that I would make a collaboration of his texts and mine. It hasn’t been difficult to choose the appropriate title of the book because it is the first one that is written about Spinology. I hope you enjoy the reading of this text as I much as I have done writing it.”
