Sankofa is an amazing cultural centre in C/ Beata Ines (street). OK, it’s in the district of Patraix but it is not easy to find. So, get your GPS fired up. It is run by the highly intelligent and delightful Pep Beltran and is part of the Sovint organisation. Sankofa is a non-profit making non-governmental organization for development, which has been active in Valencia since 2010 in the area of social awareness. Pep’s premise is that in our city we are all cross-bred and although we live together in a multicultural society we often live in our separate national groups, unaware of the other cultures we share our city with.
Sankofa works towards making us all aware of each other through activities designed to promote the knowledge of, and respect for, these other cultures. The centre offers a safe place for all, free of violence of whatever nature and degree, so that we can all learn about each other and move forward together. The great thing about the centre is that it is very flexible and literally anybody can suggest activities that will further our cultural aims. Typical activities are concerts, exhibitions, old films, and workgroups. There is also an extensive library.
But………….
Sankofa is under attack and we need to buy the centre to avoid it being turned into tourist accommodation. A crowdfunding campaign has been set up and we hope you can help us to save Sankofa.
