They took the stage only days after the release of the band’s 24th studio release (and sixth album produced by Bob Ezrin) titled Splat!. The band was on fire. Opening with the classic Machine Head track Highway Star, lead singer Ian Gillian soldier through a few microphone issues but without missing a beat the song rallied the fans immediately. A Bit On The Side, from their 2024 release (=1) offered up a newer song early in the set before a couple of early classics Hard Lovin’ Man and Into The Fire from the 1970 In Rock.

The five-piece band was anchored by early veterans Ian Gillian (vocals), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Pace (drums). Add in Don Airey (keyboards) and newest member as well as Steve Moore’s successor, Simon McBride performed with intuitive acumen and intricate talent. McBride’s guitar solo break had him upstage front and in the spotlight leaving no hesitation he could measure up to the daunting role of his predecessors. Faithful to the songs, while bringing his own style to the concert. He plays like he was always a member.

The night’s repertoire included three new songs from Splat!. First Arrogant Boy, a hard-driving story-song. In the words of Gillian’s from the behind-the-scenes video, “a protest song on behalf of the proletariat” where the song’s protagonist “finds his voice”. But when he breaks silence and speaks the truth, he is called arrogant.  Diablo, the other new single along with the former, is a chugging rocker about crossing the river into the underworld: “If you ever go to Diablo In the lower depths of Hell. And live your life in one short week. And return with a tale to tell.”

Lazy Sod and Lazy back-to-back were anything but lazy. Gillian improved on harmonica during the latter adding dimension to this well-known tune. The bluesy When A Blind Man Cries brought a more emotional vibe to the night. Next Airey was introduced for his keyboard solo. Rapture of The Deep preceded powerhouse favourites Space Truckin’ and Smoke on The Water.

The three encores opened with Guinnesis, next their first single Hush and closed the concert with Black Night.  It was a great evening for classic rock fans to immerse in one of the most legendary pioneers of hard rock.
