Located 40 minutes from the city of Valencia by train, Xàtiva is an historic town in the South of the Valencian community. Xátiva Castle or ‘Castell de Xàtiva’ (in Valenciano) is located here, strategically placed on the ancient roadway.
To get to the castle there are several routes, the easiest being a short hike up quite a steep hill. Along the way, there are plenty of shaded parts to take a rest and rehydrate. The views along the route are stunning and overlook Xàtiva and The Valencian Community. There is also a small car park at the top if you are unable to walk. However, this does fill quickly during peak times.
At the top of the castle there is a restaurant and toilet facilities, the service was fast and the views breath-taking. The castle is divided into Castell Menor and Castell Major. Although now mostly ruins, the military architecture still commands attention.
Entry fee starts at €2 and there are several rooms in the castle which offer information, models and illustrations of the history and development of the castle over the centuries. The castle also runs a road train for a small fee, going both up and down the hill. However, service times are limited and may not coincide with other transportation times.
