‘El Conde Belga’ invites the people of Valencia and visitors to indulge in typical Belgian beers and gastronomy! ‘El Conde Belga’ is a Belgian tapas bar that opened its doors towards the end of last year. Located in the heart of Valencia, in the cosmopolitan district of Cánovas, the bar offers homemade tapas and more than 40 different Belgian beers! The idea came from three Belgian friends, Antoine Blondiaux, David Carabin and Simon Leroy, who sought to bring their country’s culture closer to the people of Valencia through its gastronomy and extensive range of beers. Meeting two years ago at a community meet-up for expats living in Valencia, last year the friends decided to dedicate the time and energy necessary to convert their dream of opening a Belgian tapas bar in Valencia into a reality.
As well as the distinctive national dishes, the authenticity of this place is created through its quirky, modern décor. Incorporating the colours of the Belgian flag, the restaurant is mainly red and black with a design that creates a relaxed atmosphere allowing customers to enjoy their food and drink at their leisure. Attracting a clientele that largely consists of Belgian and French expats, ‘El Conde Belga’ also hosts a variety of meet-up events for the international resident community here in Valencia.
Greeted with a very warm welcome, the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team went along to taste some of their star tapas over the weekend. This included Belgian fries with a variety of mayonnaises, meatballs with apple and onion sauce and mussels in white wine sauce served with carrots and celery. The food was delicious and although quite full after this, no trip to a Belgian restaurant would be complete without trying a traditional homemade waffle with Belgian chocolate sauce and ‘El Conde Belga’s’ version certainly did not disappoint!
To complement the tapas, we tried a variety of beers such as the renowned ‘Kriek’ beer, a sweet cherry flavoured drink and ‘La Chouffe’- a popular Belgian golden beer with a refreshing touch and citrus notes. With 8 different taps, ‘El Conde Belga’ houses an excellent selection of beers as well as a unique concept of ‘beers with friends’ that invites customers to share a 6-litre keg of beer at the table.
Offering a fusion of Spanish tapas and authentic Belgian gastronomy, ‘El Conde Belga’ is the perfect spot for those wanting to enjoy Belgian beer and cuisine in Valencia. The owners look forward to welcoming new clients from all over the world to indulge in their country’s gastronomic culture and one day hope to open a Belgian beer shop too.
