‘FILMOTECA D’ESTIU’ IN THE TURIA GARDENS (VALENCIA) from 02 to 31 August 2024

Once again this year, the Filmoteca’s programme is moving out of the Rialto to offer the best cinema in the cool of the day of the Turia Gardens by the ‘Palau de La Musica’ of Valencia. In the now customary ‘Collita de Premis’ ‘Filmoteca D’Estiu’ brings back the most awarded films of the season: ‘Oppenheimer’ was the absolute winner of the Oscars; Anatomia d’una caiguda won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the Goya for Best European Film and swept the main categories of the European Film Awards; ‘Robot Dreams’ and ‘Mientras seas tú’ won, respectively, the Goya for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature Film. In addition to Claudia Pinto’s film, which has a Valencian production, our cinema is represented by ‘Kepler Sexto B’, best film at the Berlanga Awards of the Valencian Academy of Audiovisual Arts.

Filmoteca are also celebrating the classics by celebrating three film anniversaries: the centenary of the essential Murnau’s The Last, the fiftieth anniversary of ‘Young Frankenstein’ and the fortieth anniversary of ‘Stop Making Sense’, one of the best concert films of all time.

Finally, the first four films in a cycle dedicated to the French filmmaker Olivier Assayas, which will continue in September at the Rialto Theatre, will be shown. The greatest heir of the Nouvelle Vague is the author of one of the most stimulating filmographies in European cinema today. ‘Irma Vep’, of which Assayas will make a remake in serial format in 2022, is already a cult work. ‘Les hores de l’estiu’, ‘Viaje a Sils Maria’ and ‘Personal Shopper’ are sustained by the performances of Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart, two actresses with whom he has collaborated on more than one occasion and who – transcending the common notion of “muse” – are the true co-authors of the works.

Made up of ten films, with 26 screenings, the programme of the Filmoteca de l’Estiu in 2024 is divided into three cycles:  ‘Univers Assayas’: A cycle of the French filmmaker Olivier Assayas (France, 1955), which will continue in September as part of the regular programme of the Filmoteca Valenciana in the Rialto building.  The winning films in the main national and Valencian film competitions Aniversaris cinèfils’: Three films that are celebrating a special anniversary this year.
