24/7 VALENCIA: COULD YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT ‘VEIN TRIO’?

JIMMY GLASS:  ‘Vein Trio’ are “one of Europe’s most exciting groups,” according to John Fordham (The Guardian). They return to ‘Jimmy Glass’ for the satisfaction of the many fans they seduced on the previous occasions they played Valencia.

Based in Basel, during the last decade Vein Trio has forged an enviable reputation among the jazz audience, both for its stylistic diversity and technical achievements; the trio combines the complexity of European classical music with excitement and the energy of the most sophisticated jazz jams. The three musicians, who share musical leadership equally, create a fluid and cosmopolitan sound.

Since its formation, the group has edited an album almost every year and has gained remarkable recognition for their collaborations with great veteran soloists such as trombonist Glenn Ferris and saxophonists Greg Osby, Andy Sheppard or Dave Lieb Man. With this last one played at the Valencia Jazz Festival / Palau de Musica four years ago. Vein’s music maintains a perfect balance with its adaptations of classical and jazz traditions, such as the acclaimed album, ‘Vein Plays Ravel’ (2017).

“We define ourselves as European jazz musicians,” says Michael Arbenz, “but just like Bobo Stenson, for us it involves a usual interaction with the best American artists, especially the most veterans, from whom we can learn end”. Vein not only works with American musicians, but also with American music, as demonstrated on his acclaimed album Porgy and Bess (2011). Besides its seriousness and originality, Vein is also known for its humor, irony and talent. The album ‘Vote for Vein’ (2013),  was presented in Jimmy Glass and the compositions included playful allusions to jazz swing, as well as passages of excellent direct improvisation that exhibited the impeccable technique of the band in all jazz traditions.
