THE REGION OF VALENCIA, PROTAGONIST OF A SEASON FULL OF PREMIERES AND SHOOTINGS
The initiative REGION OF VALENCIA: WHERE FILMING IS WELCOME/La Comunitat Valenciana as a film set, promoted by ‘Turisme Comunitat Valenciana’ with the collaboration of Productors Audiovisuals Valencians (PAV), continues the development of promotional events to attract new film shoots.
Actors of the stature of Paz Vega, Raúl Arévalo, Malena Alterio, Secun de la Rosa, Miren Ibarguren and Fernando Guallar star in projects to be released in the coming months.
Feature films recognized at the Malaga and Alicante festivals such as “El cover”, “Lucas” and “Alma”, and series of imminent premieres, such as “Alba”, “El inmortal” and the last season of “La casa de papel”, are set in the Comunitat Valenciana.
Despite the forced stoppage that the health crisis caused in audiovisual production, mainly during the first half of 2020, filming in the Valencian Community has been reactivated in a decisive manner. Thus, and always in compliance with the established health safety protocols, many of the projects developed during the last few months in Valencian locations will soon see the light of day. The imminent premieres will undoubtedly continue to position the Region as one of the main filming locations for audiovisual productions.
The provinces of Valencia, Castellón and Alicante have been the setting for titles as varied as “Hollyblood”, a romantic vampire comedy directed by Jesús Font and starring Óscar Casas, Isa Montalbán and Secun de la Rosa. The shooting of this film, produced by La Canica Films, Quexito Films, SUICA Films and Amigos y Colmillos AIE, took place in several locations in the city of Valencia and the Valencian Community.
For its part, “Vasil,” Avelina Prat’s debut feature film produced by Distinto Films, has chosen the capital of the Turia as its setting. Alexandra Jiménez, Karra Elejalde, Susi Sánchez and the Bulgarian Iván Barnev star in this story about immigration and reception. The city of Valencia was also the main setting for the comedy “Toscana”, starring Malena Alterio and Francesc Orella. The exteriors of this feature film, the second by Pau Durá from Alcoy after “Formentera Lady”, have been filmed in Segorbe. The film is produced by Fosca Films and Good Machine Films, with the collaboration of TVC and À Punt.
Finally, the Atresmedia and Nadie es Perfecto comedy “El juego de las llaves”, starring Miren Ibarguren, María Castro, Eva Ugarte, Tamar Novas and Fernando Guallar, is currently being filmed in different locations in the Valencian Community. The release of this comedy of entanglement directed by Vicente Villanueva after his hit “Toc toc toc” is scheduled for 2020 with distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures Spain. Filming is taking place in locations in the cities of Valencia, Elche and Onteniente.

As a result of the positioning and interest that the Valencian Community is acquiring as a setting for filming, in the coming months several productions with stories that take place in Valencian scenarios will be released in movie theatres throughout the country. This coincidence is due to the facilities and professionalism of the various film offices distributed in its territory, as well as the diversity of locations and scenarios for all types of audiovisual productions,
After opening the last Malaga Festival, the musical comedy “El Cover”, Secun de la Rosa’s debut feature film in which the city of Benidorm is the setting for a story of love and music, a tribute to the universe of anonymous singers, was released on July 23rd. The film, which features music by, among others, Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Mocedades, Los Chunguitos, The Killers, Gloria Gaynor, Loquillo, Nena Daconte and Raphael, is produced by Nadie es perfecto in collaboration with GTS Entertainment (Universal Music Group Partner), Amazon Prime Video and Entertainment One.
“Ama”, by young director Júlia de Paz, has points in common with Secun de la Rosa’s experience: hers is also a debut feature set in Benidorm. This plot, which deals with the loneliness in which many women live out their maternity, was recognized in Malaga with the Feroz Dark Door Award for Best Film and the Silver Biznaga for Best Actress for Tamara Casellas. The director’s feature debut stems from a short film of the same name, which was awarded by the production company La Dalia Films at the last edition of the Ibiza Film Festival. The shooting took place in Alicante, Alfaz del Pi, L’Albir and Benidorm.
Likewise, “Lucas” has been released in theatres, after winning the Silver Biznaga for Best Film and the Audience Award at the Malaga Festival and seeing the talent of its protagonist, Jorge Motos, recognized with both the Silver Biznaga for Best Male Performance and the Silver Tessera for Best Actor at the Alicante Festival. The film, directed by Álex Montoya, was produced by Raw Pictures and Telespan 2000 S.L., and was shot in various locations in the natural park of La Albufera, the same setting chosen for the upcoming production “El lodo”, starring Paz Vega and Raúl Arévalo, directed by the Valencian Iñaki Sánchez Arrieta and produced by Vértice 360, Sunrise Pictures and El Lodo la película A.I.E.
Serial production
Numerous series shot in the Valencian Community are also taking over national television screens and platforms. The new Movistar+ bet starring Álex García, “El inmortal”, is being developed in scenarios of the province of Alicante. Altea, Jávea, Denia and Benidorm. The project is a drama series inspired by the band Los Miami.
“Paraíso” is also an original Movistar+ production and is shot in a multitude of Valencian locations spread between Benidorm, Xilxes, Jávea, Altea, Calpe and Valencia. Its second season is being filmed these summer months in various Valencian locations, such as Oliva and El Perelló.
All episodes of the series “Alba” are available on ATRESplayer PREMIUM. In this remake of the successful Turkish soap opera “Fatmagül”, about a young victim of a multiple rape, scenes from Villajoyosa and Alicante are recognized. The Atresmedia and Boomerang TV production features well-known television faces such as its leading lady, Elena Rivera, discovered by the general public in “Cuéntame”, and Álvaro Rico, one of the actors of the Netflix-driven global phenomenon “Élite”.
Finally, the long-awaited last season of “La casa de papel” will hit the screens around the world through Netflix next September 3 and the port of Alicante is part of its locations.
