Every August, the quiet Mediterranean town of Benicàssim does something extraordinary. It becomes the reggae capital of Europe. For six days and nights, the Rototom Sunsplash festival transforms the Castellón coastline into a global gathering of music, culture, activism, and community that draws tens of thousands of people from more than one hundred countries. The 31st edition, running from August 16 to 22, 2026, under the motto The Place to Be, is shaping up to be one of the most complete in the festival’s history, and for anyone based in Valencia, it is practically on the doorstep.

What Rototom Actually Is

It is easy to describe Rototom Sunsplash as a reggae festival and leave it there, but that description does not quite capture what it actually is. Yes, the music is the backbone, with six stages running twelve hours of uninterrupted programming every day from 5pm to 5am to avoid the worst of the summer heat. But alongside the music runs a full programme of performing arts, cinema, international gastronomy, yoga, craft workshops, ecological and agroecology sessions, debates with international figures, a dedicated family and children’s space called Magicomundo, and an afro-modern dance programme called Jamkunda.

Rototom has always positioned itself as more than a concert series. It is a community, and a remarkably consistent one, built around the values that reggae music has carried since its origins: unity, resistance, spiritual awareness, and joy.

The 2026 Lineup

This year’s programme is anchored by a lineup that moves between reggae’s roots and its contemporary frontiers with characteristic confidence. The first headline announcement brought Major Lazer Soundsystem, Shenseea, Protoje, The Skatalites with Alpheus, Queen Omega, Dub Inc, Biga*Ranx, Kybba, and Mr Vegas, a bill that immediately established this edition as one of the stronger ones in recent years.

Since then, the lineup has expanded significantly. Alpha Blondy, one of the most respected figures in African reggae and a Rototom institution, leads a second wave of announcements alongside Luciano, The Itals, Bushman, and Twinkle Brothers, cementing the festival’s commitment to the spiritual heartland of roots reggae. The Skatalites, the legendary Jamaican band widely credited with originating ska, rocksteady, and early reggae in the 1960s, bring an irreplaceable piece of musical history to the bill.

On the contemporary side, British artist Greentea Peng, whose music blends soul, R&B, and neo-psychedelia with reggae influences, joins UK grime artist Lady Leshurr and Spain’s own Lia Kali, one of the most distinctive voices on the current Spanish urban scene. French heavyweights Dub Inc, a benchmark for European reggae for more than two decades, are also confirmed. Omar Perry performs a tribute to his father, the legendary producer Lee Scratch Perry, one of dub’s founding figures, alongside French band Easy Riddim Maker. Barcelona’s Pure Negga leads the Rototom Cypher Experience, a special collaborative show bringing more than fifteen guest artists together on stage in a celebration of the new generation’s relationship with the genre.

The Welcome Party

One of the most significant new developments for 2026 is the introduction of a Welcome Party on August 16, the day before the festival officially opens. Eight hours of music on the Lion Stage, featuring Iyaman Pablo and Iri among others, kicking off the Rototom experience from day zero. For anyone with a festival ticket, the Welcome Party is completely free, making the effective festival run seven days rather than six. For those who want to join just for the opening night, entry is available for fifteen euros.

More Than Music

What separates Rototom from other major European festivals is the seriousness with which it treats its non-musical programme. The 2026 edition includes four sessions led by internationally recognised public figures: physicist and ecofeminist Vandana Shiva, Harvard neurologist Álvaro Pascual-Leone, French activist Rokhaya Diallo, and young Colombian environmentalist Francisco Vera. The festival also continues its long standing social commitment, with funding directed toward four NGO projects covering health, childhood, and humanitarian aid through Ateneu, Payasospital, UNRWA, and Stand Up for Jamaica.

For families, the pine-shaded Magicomundo space creates an entire world of games, storytelling, and activities for younger festivalgoers, while the Pachamama area offers craft and agroecology workshops, yoga sessions, and natural therapies throughout the six days.

Getting There from Valencia

From Valencia, Benicàssim is approximately one hour north by car along the AP7 motorway, or accessible by Renfe regional train from Valencia Nord station to Benicàssim, with journey times of around one hour fifteen minutes. The festival site is walkable from the town centre and the beaches, making it easy to combine the festival experience with time at the coast.

Tickets and Practical Info

The six-day season pass is the most cost effective way to attend, with early bird pricing having offered the full pass at 155 euros earlier in the year. Current ticket prices and remaining availability are on the festival website. Day tickets are also available for those who cannot commit to the full run, and the Welcome Party on August 16 is accessible separately for fifteen euros.
