Ayudadesdetumercado: an urgent appeal for aid for Ukrainian refugees

The last few months in Ukraine have resulted in devastating impacts for its citizens, many of whom have been forced to flee their home country in the face of war and destruction. From today, an urgent appeal has been released to Valencian citizens to donate food and hygiene products to the more than 2,000 Ukrainian refugees in the region.

The initiative will take continue until the 12th of July and is being launched at the 14 municipal markets around Valencia. Markets involved in the initiative include Mercado Colon, Mercado Castilla, Mercado Russafa, Mercado Cabanyal, Mercado Central Valencia, amongst others. Collection points have been set up within the markets, where people are free to leave their donations during opening hours. These donations will go to the humanitarian aid centre for Ukrainian refugees, located in the municipality of Lliria.

The main items being asked for are related to non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products and household cleaning. The Juntos Por la Vida Foundation and Confemercats have been promoting the initiative in conjunction with the humanitarian warehouse. Enlisting the slogan “Ayudadesdetumercado”, Merche Gayet, the president of Confemercats, highlights the importance of the campaign: “the markets have thrown themselves into this initiative from which we hope to obtain, at our collection points and thanks to everyone’s support, as many products as possible to help a vulnerable group that is suffering the consequences of this serious war”.

Juntos Por la Vida is a Spanish NGDO that has been collaborating in the evacuation of refugees. In its emergency campaign, they have so far facilitated the transfer of more than 2,000 refugees to Spain. Its team of volunteers assist these transfers as well as coordinating humanitarian aid, working on the psycho-social and labour accompaniment of refugees to help improve their way of life.
