I had the pleasure of stumbling upon Llit del Turia, tucked away next to the Palau de la Musica of Valencia. A friend had invited me there specifically for an open mic event that was being held, called ‘MTB Valencia’. Mind you, this was an incredibly well-organised open mic event, including good stage equipment, a band of instrumentalists, and a list of around ten to fifty different artists. Upon arrival, I was impressed with the atmosphere of the place. Picture live music, an open-air venue with tables and soft seating on the side, and a bar with a selection of drinks and nibbles.
On Llit del Turia’s website, it seems to advertise itself in relation to its position within the greenbelt: live, breathe, listen and taste the Old Turia Riverbed. It is indeed a unique selling point for the cultural bar – being tucked away in the park gives it a secluded feel, and the feeling that you’ve discovered a hidden gem.
The venue has an array of different events on offer and has something to display almost every night. On Wednesdays, for example, they have ‘Concursong’. This is a ‘contest full of songs, but also movies or series’. This pub-quiz style event targets people after work, kicking off at 20:30h. On Thursdays, they have ‘Flamingos to the river’. This event features a range of flamenco artists ‘in a jam session format’, exhibiting local Valencian artists. Additionally, wine tasting and tapas is mentioned (if the music in itself wasn’t swaying you).
‘After Brunch’, in particular, is an event that stands out. Featuring every Friday and Saturday, the event lasts four hours from 16:00h to 20:00h and is essentially an excuse to daytime drink whilst listening to some live music. This apparently includes DJs on the terrace, so I’d prepare for a daytime-event type feel. Oh, and also, it’s free entry, so there’s nothing to stop you from making an early reservation.
MTB, the open mic night that I attended, takes place on Sundays, and is a nice relaxing event to end your week with. Be warned, however, that there is no food on offer at this event. ‘Dinner Soul’ is an event on Friday evenings that caters towards music-lovers keen for some Mediterranean gastronomy. The music at these dinners seems to range from Columbian fusion to Cuban to Jazz, kicking off just half an hour after the brunch event.
Aside from the events, however, people are more than welcome to visit Llit del Turia for a drink or a meal when they fancy. Their menu of the day is available at noon from Monday to Friday, featuring a starter, main, dessert, drink and coffee for just ten euros. This is modified every day according to the market, adding to its classic Mediterranean feel.
