##24/7 VALENCIA: Could you tell us more about the ‘Filmoteca D’Estiu’ 2020 film programme?
FILMOTECA: The thematic cycle of the 2020 edition of the ‘Filmoteca d’estiu’ aims to restore, if only on screen, the kisses and caresses that the Covid-19 has stolen from us. Until a global pandemic imposed physical distance, summer was the season of sensuality and flirtation, of rubbing bodies bathed in sunshine, of first love, of romances that lasted a holiday. And throughout its history, with different approaches and narrative models, cinema has captured the essence of summer voluptuousness. The selection of films in this cycle reflects this diversity: American, French, German, Japanese and Spanish films from different periods and styles. From ‘PEOPLE ON SUNDAY’, a dazzling jewel of silent cinema, inexplicably little known despite being signed by Ulmer, Siodmak and Wilder, to that landmark of popular 80s cinema that is ‘DIRTY DANCING’, through Preminger, Rohmer and Kawase.
The diversity also extends to the willing subjects in these films. Although in the history of cinema the male and heterosexual point of view is hegemonic, in Summer Was Sexy! there is also homosexual desire (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME) and, above all, women who desire: the most hedonistic Seberg in BONJOUR TRISTESSE; the adolescent Rohmerian Pauline, who awakens to the pleasures of the flesh while adults theorize about love; Baby, who devours the sculptor Johnny with her eyes during her dance classes in ‘DIRTY DANCING’; or the protagonist of ‘SUC DE SÍNDRIA’, a luminous short film that delicately outlines the process that a woman goes through, hand in hand with her partner, to recover the pleasure of sex after a rape.
In the films of the cycle, the sensuality of the flesh merges with that of nature, which we have missed so much during almost three months of confinement. Those who don’t have any holidays this summer will be able to travel to a lake on the outskirts of Berlin, the coves of the French Riviera, the landscapes of northern Italy, the beaches of Normandy or a remote Japanese island… They will also travel through the landscapes of our land: Traiguera (Castelló), the village where ‘LA INNOCÈNCIA’ takes place, and all the beaches and natural enclaves that are collected in the clips of home movies that open the sessions.
