Led by Austrian drummer Mathias Ruppnig and German bassist Tom Berkmann – both collaborators with Kurt Rosenwinkel and John Hollenbeck – the line-up also features American saxophonist Matt Chalk and NY-based pianist Tony Tixier, a French instrumentalist with an international reputation.Tixier, who has previously performed at the Jimmy Glass as a leader or with Seamus Blake, opened for Herbie Hancock at the Jazz Tête Festival in Clermont-Ferrand in 2012.Scopes’ roots in the jazz tradition are evident, but the search for a different pulse has shaped a young and elegant sound world that incorporates wider influences.
