Valencia, March 1st — Legendary singer-songwriter Peter Perrett delivered a captivating performance at the iconic ’16 Toneladas’ venue in Valencia, leaving the packed and loyal crowd in awe with a mix of classic songs from ‘The Only Ones’ period and plenty of newer tracks too. Fans were treated to an unforgettable night filled with raw energy, poetic lyrics, and Perrett’s signature blend of underground rock and introspective storytelling. With Peter’s respective sons on melodic bass (Peter) and the superb lead guitarist (Jaime), the band really complemented every song throughout the set. They transmitted a lot of love and feel for the music too. The audience picked up on the dynamics of the group and the band were able to engage them throughout the concert and the set never sagged. It has to be said, their dynamic drummer was superb. He drove the band ever forward and he had ‘swing’ in spades too! Peter Perrett’s charisma and creativity remains undimmed and his band are the perfect foil for his unique vision.
The set began with the poignant ‘Dignity’, immediately drawing the audience into Perrett’s world. The momentum continued with ‘Sweet Endeavour’ and ‘The Big Sleep’, each song building on the last with powerful guitar riffs and Perrett’s unmistakable voice. Here’s a man who has lived the druggy rock’n’roll life to the extreme but has come out the other end with more creativity than ever. Getting clean has many upsides.
Tracks like ‘An Epic Story’ and ‘The Immortal Story’ showcased his lyrical prowess, weaving tales of life’s complexities. ‘Secret Taliban Wife’ added a provocative edge, while ‘Flaming Torch’ brought a nostalgic vibe that long-time fans cherished.
A standout moment of this gig was the rendition of ‘Another Girl, Another Planet,’ the classic hit from his golden period as the singer/songwriter of ‘The Only Ones’. The entire room was electrified, with Perrett’s vocals cutting through the air as the audience echoed the chorus back to him. What a magical song! It was an emotional moment on an atmospheric night with plenty of special moments.
He closed the main set with ‘The Beast’, but the crowd wasn’t ready to say goodbye. Perrett’s gallows humour remained intact as he said that if he went backstage he might not come back alive….so he was staying on stage for the encore! Indeed, the encore featured a powerful four-song sequence: ‘Daughter’, ‘Take Me Home’, ‘Someone Who Cares’, and the defiant ‘Disinfectant’.
Throughout the evening, Perrett proved he remains a force to be reckoned with, blending vulnerability and grit in a way few artists of his generation can. The show was a testament to his enduring talent and the timelessness of his music, leaving Valencia with a night to remember. “You’ve been a lovely audience and I’m not just saying that…” Perrett added at the end, to loud applause. He left a lot of people with smiles on their faces in Valencia…and that’s a gift.
