Sp-Berner invests two million euros to install its own photovoltaic power plant that will prevent the emission of 1920 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year. In this first phase, it will cover a total area of 18,300 m2 and will save 514,277 litres of oil per year. It will take advantage of the space available on the roofs of its factory to generate 5,190,079 kWh of energy, equivalent to planting 96,000 trees per year.
Sp-Berner, specialist and leading manufacturer of sustainable plastic solutions for home and industry, is taking a further step in its sustainability strategy with the construction of its new photovoltaic power plant.
The new photovoltaic generation plant is located on the roofs of its production centre and headquarters in Aldaya (Valencia) and has involved an investment of 1.9 million euros, distributed over a total surface area of 18,300 m2 – the equivalent of 4 football pitches – and made up of more than 7,000 545Wp solar panels.
With this investment, the company will generate 5,190,079 kWh of solar energy annually, which would be the equivalent of supplying electricity to around 1,000 homes for a whole year.
Sp-Berner thus significantly reduces the CO2 footprint of its products, helping to minimise the effects of the global climate crisis. In addition, it will avoid the emission of 1,920 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, which would mean planting 96,000 trees per year.
Work on this new initiative began in February 2022 and will culminate next November with the facility completed and 100% operational.
This investment is part of the first phase of Sp-Berner Plastic Group’s Strategic Sustainability Plan, which aims to extend this facility to the rest of its main production centre in Aldaya, as well as progressively to the plants in Torrente (Recycling Plant) and Chiva (Spalex).
Sp-Berner’s goal for 2025 is to achieve 90% of the energy used from certified renewable sources only.
“At Sp-Berner we are passionate and determined about sustainability and circularity,” says CEO Jorge Escarpa.
Standard bearers for sustainability
Sp-Berner has been one of the pioneering companies in Spain in terms of sustainability and the use of resources, which is why more than 10 years ago it invested in its own plant for recycled materials in which it transforms used post-consumer plastics into new material to manufacture products that make life in the home easier for everyone.
In this sense, in 2021, 40% of the raw material used was recycled plastic, giving life to new sustainable products. A clear example of how to close the 360º circle in a necessary “circular economy”.
During the 2021 financial year, the company focused its main investments on its new recycled material plant (expanding the previous facility) and on the automation of its production plants, continuing with its culture of reinvesting profits, in order to be increasingly competitive and sustainable.
Sp-Berner, with almost 60 years of experience in plastic processing, recycles more than 20,000 tonnes of post-industrial and post-consumer plastic annually.
The Company has the largest infrastructure in the plastic transformation and injection sector in Spain, with a total surface area of 347,350 m2, making it the leading and benchmark company in the sector.
The Company employs 830 workers and its commercial organisation is made up of four large strategic business areas at national and international level. The Consumer Division, which includes cleaning articles, household goods, tidying and personal care, the Garden and Advertising Furniture Division, which brings together garden furniture, camping articles and advertising furniture; the Industrial Division, which offers logistics solutions (boxes, pallets, plastic strapping) and closures for the food, drugstore and perfumery sectors; and finally the strategic area of Recycling Plastics.
