‘Colla Monlleó’ is a Valencian artistic pottery shop since 1860 in the emblematic Plaza Redonda. Here, you will find traditional pieces painted and handmade in Valencia. There are a wide range of plates, tiles, jugs… and all of them reproductions of medieval, 17th, 19th and modern ceramics. This is a family-run business dedicated to the sale of handmade ceramics: works to order, reproductions of Alcora ceramics from the 18th century, Valencian ceramics from the 19th century, Socarrats, Paterna ceramics, Gothic blue, collection jugs, porcelain and alabaster. There are a wide range of ceramics, both to give as a gift and to decorate your home. We interviewed the owner and potter at the ceramics shop.
24/7 VALENCIA: COULD YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR CERAMICS SHOP AND YOUR PASSION FOR HIKING?
VICENT OF ‘COLLA MONLLEÓ’: Hello, my name is Vicent. I was born in València in La Plaza Redonda, in 1964. My family has been living and selling pottery in this lovely part of the city since 1860 and I make some of the pottery I sell myself, as I have been a potter for many years.
In general, I like ceramics very much, I could even say that I am passionate about them. However, there is something I like even more and for which I feel an even greater passion, which is difficult to describe, and that is the mountains and mountaineering!
Walking through forests and meadows and climbing to the high snowy peaks, either walking or climbing, is something that is an integral part of me and I cannot define myself without it. From a very early age, when I was six or seven years old, I was already hiking in the hills near a small village where my family spent the summer and since then I have never stopped doing it: at birth we began to breathe and we don’t stop doing it until the last seconds of our lives.
Now, in addition to handcrafting ceramics, I dedicate my time to being a professional guide, that is, helping other people to discover incredibly beautiful places while discovering their own limits and, therefore, their own essence.
Over the course of a few articles I would like to transmit to you, some of the emotions I feel when, after reaching a summit, I contemplate the world that opens magnificently and generously before my senses. On other occasions, I will tell you no less exciting things about my city and about our traditional pottery.
See you soon!
