WHAT HAPPENED AT THE GOYA FILM AWARDS IN VALENCIA?

#The red carpet was rolled out in Valencia for the 36th Goya Awards ceremony at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía last Saturday. The city welcomed the awards with fanfare, installing 12 Goya statues in 12 different barrios.

A total of 160 films were selected to compete, including the record-breaking most nominated film, ‘El buen patrón’, which was nominated for 20 awards. The film won six awards including Best Film, Best Director (Fernando León de Aranoa), Best Actor (Javier Bardem), and Best Original Screenplay. These awards were the seventh Goya Awards to be bestowed on director Fernando León de Aranoa and leading actor Javier Bardem. ‘El buen patrón’ was followed by ‘Las leyes de la frontera’, which took home five awards.

A new category was unveiled at the Goyas this year – the non-competitive International Honorary Goya which was awarded to Australian actress Cate Blanchett. Accepting the award from actress Penélope Cruz and director Pedro Almodóvar, Blanchett described how watching films by Spanish director Luis Bunuel in high school changed how she saw the world. Blanchett and Almodóvar will be collaborating in an upcoming adaptaion of Lucia Berlin’s short story collection ‘A Manual for Cleaning Women.’

An Honorary Goya was also presented to José Sacristán, who was introduced via the many titles of his six-decade filmography. The late Verónica Forqué, an actress across stage and screen who won four Goya Awards and was the most award-winning actress alongside Carmen Maura, was also memorialised at this year’s ceremony.
