“Walking through Valencia this week, you may catch a sight that might cause you to look again. Donned in what’s known as a ‘capirote’, the pointed hood bears a striking resemblance to the KKK. The capirote predates the 20th Century and is worn by penitents during the Holy Week (Semana Santa) in Spain in order to not draw attention to themselves but towards God. Traditionally, the capirote was worn as a means of punishment, with various colours given for various crimes. Following the inquisition, this style was retained as a sign of penance.”
