The exhibition “Eduardo Rosales. Desde el fondo del alma al papel” can be visited from June 8 to September 24 at the Casino de Agricultura in Valencia. The exhibition brings together sixty drawings and watercolours by Rosales (1836-1873), one of the leading figures in the history of 19th-century Spanish art. The El Secreto de la Filantropía Foundation presents the exhibition to pay tribute to this key figure in Spanish art, on the 150th anniversary of his death.
Spanning from the initial sketches and drawings of a young Rosales during his time at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts, to the pencil sketchings of characters inspired by the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, and a collection of captivating female portraits crafted during his long stays in Rome, the exhibition also features preparatory studies for his remarkable “history paintings” like “Doña Isabel la Católica dictating her will.” Additionally, it includes a diverse array of interesting drawings and watercolours capturing landscapes and scenes from his frequent excursions to Panticosa and Murcia in the last years of his life.
All the works in this exhibition come from a single private collection, that of the Madrid architect Rafael Gil, who has generously donated an outstanding series of objects, photographs and personal documents of the painter. He has also donated a bronze bust of the artist, a reproduction of the upper part of the sculpture made by Mateo Inurria in 1922, installed in homage to Rosales in the promenade that bears his name in Madrid.
The opening ceremony of the exhibition “Eduardo Rosales. Desde el fondo del alma al papel” will take place on Thursday 8 June at 19:30h, with the participation of Luis Trigo, president of the foundation El Secreto de la Filantropía, Carmen de Armiñán, the painter’s great-great-granddaughter, and the writer Andrés Trapiello, author of the text of the catalogue that will be published shortly for the exhibition.
