The prestigious American singer and bassist with Sicilian roots, Tonina Saputo, will perform at ‘Marino Jazz’ on Wednesday 7th June at 7.30 pm.The St. Louis-raised artist performs original music along with arrangements of Spanish, English and Italian. Tonina Saputo’s name has been sounding for years in the American and European music press as one of the voices of the future. Although she has a solid academic background, this unique singer, composer, bassist, guitarist and poet challenges traditional notions of jazz to embrace a multicultural collection of musical styles in which genres of funk, soul and folk music can be experienced.
The audience of the jazz club ‘Marino Jazz’ of El Cabanyal, will have the opportunity to see this unique artist live. Tonina, who will sing and play bass and double bass, will be accompanied by her band, made up of top musicians such as David Gómez (saxophone), Jackson Stokes (guitar) and Tim Moore (drums).
In 2014, Tonina was accepted to study bass performance at Berklee’s Valencia campus in Spain, where she met and worked with Grammy award-winning producer and composer Javier Limón. After graduating, Tonina opened for Grammy Award-winning artist Lalah Hathaway and was named one of the prestigious American music outlet NPR’s favourite new artists of 2018. Her rendition of “Historia de un Amor” was included in former President Barack Obama’s list of 100 favourite songs that same year.
According to Billboard, Saputo brings a “throaty, jazzy, syncopated vibe to her readings of Latin covers and beyond. A sultry, intriguing voice that floats effortlessly over the beats, evocative of Billie Holiday, she commands that kind of pull.”
