‘VIII ARTICHOKE FESTIVAL OF ALAQUÀS’ FROM 6th to 9th FEBRUARY …CUISINE, ARTS & CRAFTS, DANCE, LIVE MUSIC AND MORE!

Gastronomy, culture and commerce come together in this multitudinous event that will take place from 6th to 9th February in the Plaza de la constitución  of Alaquàs. For the first time, the ‘Associació d’amics i amigues del cant de la carxofa’ (Friends of the carxofa singing association) joins with the Comerciants associats d’Alaquàs and l’associació d’hostaleria I restauració d’alaquàs in the organisation of the event. Under the slogan ‘Més poble que mai’, the ‘carxofa festival’ has a wide-ranging programme of activities which includes meetings, crafts, dance, live music, cuisine and solidarity.

Come and enjoy the traditional gastronomic, cultural and commercial festival that the town of Alaquàs hosts every year. After the DANA disaster, L’horta Sud has experienced the worst moment in its history, but it has also seen the emergence of a strong sense of unity among the people, which deserved to be honoured in this celebration. Under the slogan ‘més poble que mai’ the VIII ‘Festa de la Carxofa d’Alaquàs’, which will be held from 6th to 9th February, will this year embrace participants from the affected areas and will aspire to be much more than a gastronomic and leisure event. Because this time, the ‘Carxofa’ festival will become a symbol of resilience, hope and solidarity.

Thursday 6 February: reflection on gastronomy and territory
The event will kick off with a gastronomic discussion on the role of cuisine as a link to identity and social cohesion. This colloquium will be attended by Óscar Torrijos, the first Valencian to be awarded a Michelin Star, together with other experts such as Paco Alonso (journalist and food writer), Chabe Soler (chef at the Villa Indiano restaurant) and Rosa María Cantos (president of AHORA).

Friday 7 February: culture and spectacle at the Castle
The cloister of the Castell de Alaquàs will host a cultural evening which will include a magic show, poetry readings by local poets and a concert by the Alaquàs Music School. There will also be a prize-giving ceremony for the Passaport Carxofa, an incentive programme to encourage shopping in local shops.

Saturday 8 February: gastronomy, crafts and music
Saturday will be a key day in the programme, with the celebration of the new Carxofa rice and carxofa rice competition. The competition will bring together five local associations that will prepare their dishes in the Plaza de la Constitución, where a professional jury will evaluate the proposals. The jury will be made up of prominent figures such as Pablo Margós (chef of the Gastro Trinquet Group), Toni Carceller (former MasterChef contestant), Almudena Ortuño (food journalist) and Viccocinillas (rice influencer). Throughout the day, attendees will be able to visit the craft and trade fair, where local and artisan products will be on display. There will also be gastronomic tastings and musical performances, with the eagerly awaited performance by the group Poleo and a session by DJ Xema.

Sunday 9 February: the big day with the tapas competition
Sunday will be the main day of the Festa de la Carxofa, with the opening of the commercial and craft fair from 10:00 am and music and dance performances in Alaquàs Castle. One of the most eagerly awaited moments will be the tapas competition, where local restaurants will compete to create the best artichoke tapa. La Sequieta, Cuarta Torre, La Nova Terreta, Ateneo, Mesón Almansa, La Cuina de Gemma and Las Viandas de Larosa will be taking part, as well as the Taberna Gourmet La Casota de Paiporta, representing the municipalities affected by the DANA.

Some of the creations to be tasted include artichoke flower confit with truffle oil and Iberian ham; artichoke hummus with white beans; steamed artichoke on romescu sauce or artichoke figatell. The jury will be made up of leading gastronomic figures such as Raúl Resino (Michelin-starred chef), David Joaquín (chef at Farigola i Menta), Carla Centelles (Hedonist Guide) and Javier Atencia (Associació Gastronòmica El Cullerot d’Alaquàs).

The day will conclude with an exhibition by the Muixaranga and another performance by Poleo, bringing to a close a weekend full of culture, tradition and conviviality.
