Forget simply ordering a paella. This Valencia cooking experience puts you behind the pan — learning how to prepare one yourself, then sitting down to enjoy the results.
There are plenty of places in Valencia where you can eat paella. But if you really want to understand what goes into making this most Valencian of dishes, Paella Cooking Class Valencia offers the chance to get your hands dirty — literally.
Held in the garden of The Venue Hostel on Calle Dolores Alcaide, the three-hour workshop takes participants through the process of preparing paella from start to finish, combining cooking, local culinary traditions and a relaxed social atmosphere.
And, importantly, you don’t just watch someone else make it.
You make the paella yourself.
FROM THE INGREDIENTS TO THE FINISHED PAELLA
The experience begins with a welcome in the garden before participants are introduced to the ingredients, cooking techniques and traditions behind Valencian paella.
There are two options: a traditional paella or a vegetarian version, with the cooking process explained step by step.
The idea is to give participants a practical understanding of how the dish comes together — rather than simply handing them a recipe and sending them home.
Once the cooking is complete, everyone sits down together to eat.
The €60 experience includes:
- 👨🍳 Three-hour cooking workshop
- 🥘 Ingredients
- 🍷 Welcome
- 🍢 Tapas
- 🥘 Your freshly prepared paella
- 🍰 Dessert
- 📖 Recipe book
- 📜 Certificate
So you leave with more than a full stomach: you also have the knowledge — and recipe — to try making your own paella again.
A SOCIAL VALENCIAN EXPERIENCE
The workshop takes place Tuesday to Saturday at 12:00, with sessions conducted in both English and Spanish.
Groups range from two to 20 people, making it suitable for couples, families, groups of friends, international visitors or Valencia residents who simply want to improve their paella-making skills.
The setting is deliberately informal, with the cooking taking place in the garden before everyone shares the finished meal together.
For visitors, it offers something beyond the standard sightseeing experience. For residents, it could be an opportunity to discover more about one of Valencia’s most famous culinary traditions — and perhaps settle a few arguments about how a proper paella should actually be made!
DIETARY REQUIREMENTS?
Dietary restrictions should be mentioned when making the booking, using the Additional Information section.
The organisers say they can adapt preparations to particular dietary requirements and, in some circumstances, can even arrange a special paella for two people so that someone with dietary restrictions can enjoy their own preparation alongside another participant.
WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS?
Don’t necessarily let a Valencian rain shower put you off.
The cooking class normally goes ahead in rainy conditions. However, if particularly adverse weather makes it impossible to run the activity properly, the session may be cancelled.
Participants will be contacted via WhatsApp if this happens.
Private sessions are also available, subject to availability, with personalised arrangements available on request.

THE 24/7 VALENCIA VERDICT
For anyone who has ever sat in front of a steaming paella in Valencia and thought, “I wonder if I could actually make one of these myself?” — this is an opportunity to find out.

And there is something particularly satisfying about eating a paella when you’ve helped make it yourself.
